It depends on how the person passed, a person who had a long illness will be mentally drained and these often go into "hospital" where healers restore their energy. This can take some time.

All go to a place called the Astral plane of existence when they pass over to adjust to a life in Spirit; this occurs within minutes of the soul leaving the body.
The Astral plane is very much like Earth and is a place where souls can rid themselves of the materialistic vestiges of their life on Earth. In other words, if you lived a good life on earth and sacrificed much. in order to help others and you always dreamed of owning a luxury motor yacht, then you can have this on the Astral plane. Some people stay on the Astral world for some time ( I won't say many years because linear time is an earthly construct and doesn't apply in spirit), until they have played out their materialist urges, then they are ready for the lessons that the Astral world has to offer.
Once these lessons are learned, they have a type of passing over again to the next level (without the negative connotations of death that we have), the object being to constantly evolve up the levels until you are ready to become one with God.

I suppose it's a bit like a PC game really, only in real life there are no shortcuts and no cheats.

I can't truly answer your question because I have not experienced it myself, but I have experienced something that might help. I was there when my father-in-law died. There was a point that I "felt" a presence leave his body. The strange thing was that his heart was still beating. If I was "making it up in my mind" I would have done it after his heart stopped beating.

It was strange to me that I felt what I thought might be his soul leave his body early. Your soul might begin it's journey before your body is entirely dead. I am a Christian and am struggling to find where this might be explained by the bible. I can understand your question, because in the end we never really know.

According to revelations there is a waiting period, On the day of the coming of the lord, the ones that are suppose to go to Heaven will all go together.

We go to a place where we deal with the problems we had on Earth, then we come back, usually in the same family-line as a baby....it's called reincarnation. This goes on until the end of the world and then we are judged based on our last life.

We aren't judged right away, but we go to heaven or hell pretty quick I believe. No one knows, it's just what we understand from the Scripture.

That is a question to ask the creator of heaven and earth, the one who will judge the living and the death.

You have to wait in line. Then when your name is called you run down to contestant row and bid on prizes. If you win your prize, you get up on stage and then you try to win more prizes. If you are lucky enough to win the prizes, and you are the top winner in the three that they picked to go and try to win. Then you get to spin the Big wheel, and If you are the one nearest the $1.00 mark without going over then you will be in the final round.
When you get to the final showcase, you get to bid on more prizes. Your showcase is an entertaiment stand.....a trip to the swiss alps....and a new corvette....you pass this showcase.
the other person bids....25,000. And the MC says this is your showcase. Its a color tv.....and then its a sailboat.....and then a trip for two to sunny Jamacia.......and when you come back you will be riding around on your new harley's a his and hers.....you bid....27,500. then they do a commercial break. when the show begins, they start with you....your actual price is 32,575.00 and then they move over to the next person your actual price is 45,000.00 Then the mC points to you and say you win.....so you go to heaven while the other person sinks and head to hell.
That is how it works.

The judgment doesn't come until after the 1000 years of Christ's reign on Earth.

We don't know when that will start so we don't know when we will be judged.

Communication with spirits can lead to sorcery. Spirits may communicate with you but I wouldn't actively seek to communicate with them. The spirits will all be with us on this earth until the millenium.

the "crossing over" process is different for everybody, as people die in different ways, for old people who die of old age the "crossing over" period begins before they die, as there past family and loved ones come around to help ease the "crossing"so yes we can communicate with past loved ones, as for being judged god/jesus does not judges us, we judge ourselves, and no, there is no waiting period, the spirit leaves the body as soon as our earthly body dies, i hope this has been of help to you
