True.

The word that best fits for the bonus question, imo, is TYRANT.

As a Christian, I've never known my God to use fear. People tend to get this mixed up version of what sins are and what Hell is and they then think we live in fear of those things. However, Christ removes the fear of any Hell as soon as we accept Him. Without Jesus, we are held responsible for our ongoing sin, but God is also warning us of the price we pay for sin why we're alive. When you believe that you're going to live forever in an afterlife and that all of your unintentional sins: past, present, and future will be forgiven - What's to fear?

I call people that use fear to control you terrorists. I call people that misrepresent my beliefs ignorant to the truth.

I'd go further and say this god is passive-aggressive in the use of this technique. And your bonus question?

Wow. That could be a part of so many psychiatric pathologies. I'd go with the umbrella term of "character flawed" and also consider "psychopath." "Sadist" too.

In terms of the power hungry using fear to control and manipulate, I'd use, Machiavellian.

Hey night star,

God doesn't require that we feel fear to love him. In fact Romans says that it is the kindness of God which leads us to repentance. Fearing God (meaning having respect) is wisdom --- it's a wise thing to fear God and His commandments because we have to give an account- is what the Bible teaches. Not be afraid of Him and be forced to love Him.

Hope that helps,

Nickster

Bonus: Manipulator?

True.

Sales People, Government, Parents, Police and of course the clergy are classic examples of people who use fear to "control". I prefer to deem their actions as motivators by fear as the decision to follow is still mine. I am so grateful for the fear of using drugs given to me by my parents.

True

But the REAL GOD the Bible talks about doesn't require us to FEEL FEAR, as you say. In the book of Proverbs it talks about fearing the Lord. Fear there isn't the same as we know it. We think of fear as making us afraid. To fear the Lord simply means to obey Him. That you love Him enough to obey Him. That's all it means. Simple as that.

People that use fear to control us are called dictators, tyrants. God is not that type of person. If He was, He would've never given us the FREE WILL to choose Him. He doesn't force us to love Him, serve Him, obey Him, etc. He gave us the opportunity to CHOOSE it for ourselves.

True. Absolutely. Perfect love knows no fear.

What do they call people that use fear to control you?

Terrorists... dictators... tyrants... some might even go so far as to say priests. Personally, I call anyone who tries to use fear to control me a pitiful failure. My fear strengthens me, it does not control me.

We are supposed to Fear God, but not a cowering terror. It means we are suppose to respect him. Let's think for a moment of the people who know us best yet love us most. Here of course I have to mention my husband. Do I fear him? I don't fear that he's going to beat me up.Therefore I don't cower before him. But I do fear him. I fear offending him. I fear wounding him. Above all I fear breaking his heart. That's it. I fear breaking his heart. And this is what scripture has in mind when it insists we are to fear God. It also can just mean that we are to fear him because of who he is.The truth is we are to fear God; we are meant to fear God; we are even commanded to fear God.

The same reason a child is taught to fear running into the street. Because he is incapable of fully understanding the consequences.
