My (ex) long-term partner was diagnosed with schizophrenia a number of years ago. It doesn't necessarily mean that a person is unstable or violent (although some can be). Presumably the person you're referring to seems fairly stable, or you would have had suspicions that something was wrong. For many 'mild' schizophrenics the main disabling factors are paranoia and depression. This can become draining on a relationship, so you need to have a lot of patience to see you through. On a separate issue, the medication required to control schizophrenia seems to cause impotence in some men, I don't know whether it has any affect on sex-drive in female patients. Don't write off the possibility of a relationship, but you need to go into it prepared for bad times as well as good ones. Good luck.

Like all illnesses Schizophrenia comes in different degrees. Even in the more severe cases medication keeps it under control. The person you are talking about from your description would seem to be at the less severe end of the spectrum. With some of the medication the emotions can be dampened. There is no reason why you should not spend time with him / her till you find how their illness affects your relationship. Good luck since you seem to be a thinking and caring sort of person to look for answers rather than just run.

If I was thinking of a serious relationship, no. To just hang out, go to the movies like I do with girlfriends, ok. My understanding is that there is a genetic component to schizophrenia and so I would not want to bring a child into the world with such a painful condition to live with!

It's tough...I've thought about this before from experiences of my friends...because it's really really harsh to say that people with a mental illness shouldn't have a partner, of course, but at the same time it's so hard to deal with someone who's personality can completely change and often does not resemble the person that you wanted to date, or fell in love with...it's a really tough one, but must be dealt with on an individual basis of both the person you are dating and also yourself....

Honestly, no. I work in the mental health profession and have had too many strange experiences with people who have schizophrenia. If you do decide to date this person, make sure they have a history of med compliance, check to see if they have a history of violence (if they do, its a deal breaker), check their last psychiatric hospitalization (to determine if they are psychiatrically stable), find out if they have command hallucinations (voices that demand the person to do certain things), and look at their overall functioning ( do they work, do they have a social life, family support...etc. etc.) Good luck!

i wouldn't because a relationship like that would cause problems they should only be a friend but first of all ask them was they diagnose with it and ask to see proof because they could be lying . Either way this is a friend type. How would you explain that to your parents, friends or children

Schizophrenia...no. They're unstable, if it was depression or something I wouldn't mind...but I've heard about people who get involved with it and it doens't end pretty.

depends on the kind of schizo. I met a girl who had schizo. she said she could see colors around you, she said it was your chakra or stuff like that. She also could see elves (?). That wasnt something serious, and i could have date her, but the i didnt like her physically...
my gf in the other side, says she can see ghosts (she sees dead people...truly), that happens from time to time. you could say thats schizo too. as long as the guys isnt dangerous, theres no problem.

Not unless they were very, very in control of taking their meds, keen to get psychiatric help and were able to manage in normal society i.e. maintain job and home.

I would not, I think you should be somewhat careful about who you allow yourself to grow feelings for.

Sex would still be ok maybe, It might be like doing it with multiple people while still being somewhat safe!

what do ya think?!?
