I mean obviously when you find black specks on your cat or dog it says they have some fleas and I know it is blood, but blood from where? Is it from the flea or the pet?

The black specks are flea dirt...it is actually the fecal matter from the fleas. To truly test if that is from fleas...take a flea comb to your pet (or try to pull some of the black specks off the pet)...put the hair, specks, etc on a paper towel and get it wet with peroxide...if it turns brown or red it's flea dirt.

Fleas can create something called flea dirt, if you wet it and it turns a reddish color, it's definitely flea dirt. When fleas feast on your pet, they are biting into your pets skin, but since fleas are so small, so are the wounds. This is what I suspect you are seeing and after a nice flea bath and maybe some Advantix or front line, you will not see the problem again. Frontline and Advantix are due Monthly during flea season, but do work wonders! I have never had a flea problem after using these products. Good luck!

It is from the pet. The flea bites your animal eats the blood and the black spots are dried blood (fecal material) that the flea has digested

Could be acne. Is it on the cat's chin? I had two cats who both had "kitty acne", which manifested itself as black specks on the chin fur.

Also, as you mentioned, it could also be flea dirt (poop)

Where are the specks located? If somewhere other than the face, it's probably flea dirt.
