I am making a robot and I need a metal round sliding portion. What is that metal and surface on like shocks that is ultra smooth.. I have seen it other places also where a metal rod is ultra smooth. I can't find the right name to do a search for it though. Is it chromed then machined or polished?

Hard chrome plate is used on hydraulic cylinders.
It is much more durable than the base metal that is the piston rod and requires no further machining after it is applied.

It's not about the particular metal but how finely it is machined.

You can polish steel, and then have it hard-chromed for the best finish and durability.
