Catholicism was born out of the early Chrisitan movement. The Protestant Reformation caused a split among believers and eventually grew into what we consider today's Proetestant religions. Both Catholics and Protestants are Christians.

The Jesuits were tasked by the Pope with figuring out which (Catholic or Lutheran, the original Protestants) had the most evidence to support their Bible (they are not the same) and theology. The Jesuits picked Lutheranism; startling considering Jesuits are a Catholoic organization and faced excommunication for their decision. Based on that, I would say that only one is the actual religion, so Lutheranism is the most ancient.

Well first of all catholic and protestant are denominations within the christian religion. They are not religions. Second of all the the protestant churches came out of the 16th century reformation initiated by Martin Luther's posting of the 95 thesis on his local parish door in Germany. His subsequent trial and excommunication by the established church was for his insistence of the dual reformation doctines of "solo vide" (faith alone) and "solo scriptura" (scripture alone). After the pope declared him a heretic a grass roots movement spread accross Europe and the Protestant reformation was on. It would take a century or more of very "unchristian like behavior" before things would settle down.

The Catholic Church rightfully claims its lineage all the way back to the original bishopric of Rome said to be held by the apostle Peter (1st century). So is it any wonder they didn't want to surrender their claim that church tradition was equally authoritative as scripture? I can't say I blame them. Although I certainly don't support their position.
