1. Be respectful
2. Do your best
3. Treat others as you wish to be treated
4. Don't lie, steal, cheat, kill
5. Control yourself.
6. Contribute to the family
7. Be responsible
8. Be the hero, not the villian
9. Be kind to the old, infirm, the ill, the frail, the little ones, the helpless--help when you can
I am sure there are pages and pages of values/standards American teens are taught. Every family is different. Every religion is different, so there are variables, but these are some values/ideals I've raised my son with. So far he is someone I am very proud of and enjoy living with. If you can say that, I think you are on the right track.

I would expect my children when they become teenagers to be respectful, honorable, truthful, loving, caring, helpful, attend school, get good grades, do chores around the house, and when they turn 16 get a part time job so they can buy themselves a car, I feel that if they have to purchase the car with their own money that they will take care of the car better...

In my family we have to respect my parents, keep up with our religion, go to school, get good grades, and if we chose to get married then we must marry someone that can take care of us (meaning my husband should be able to support me when I need it financially). Also if we decide to have children then that means that our children come first.

Parents can expect that their teenagers will act like little brats and perhaps tell them they hate them.
