Never mind that you don't want to kill yourself.

You are cutting yourself. You are deliberately creating openings in the skin through which any number of nasty, now-antibiotic-resistant germs can enter your system and make you seriously ill - might even make you smell bad, if clostridium gets in there.

So tell me - in light of the above, is cutting normal?

No. You have to see a therapist who can help you make sense of your thought processes, which probably need some readjustment.

(There are many reasons for cutting: some do it because they are so numb they want to feel something - anything; some cut because they loathe themselves - and you need to find out your motivation so that you can stop before you get a serious infection- by the way, until about 60 years ago even the tiniest cut was reason for grave concern because nobody had antibiotics, and if you were a cutter then, you could easily have killed yourself. Problem is, many of these germs now are antibiotic-resistant)

I HAVE TO ADD THIS PS
Yes, El Unico is ignorant; as for the cutters who have answered: STOP cutting. You need to find out the reason for this behaviour so that you can stop it because it is NOT PLEASANT, NOT NORMAL and DANGEROUS.

Well, as someone above said, you could get an infection. Also, you might accidentally cut too deep one time, so you won't be able to control the bleeding. This is a really bad problem.

Also, if you are cutting yourself, you are not dealing with emotional pain well. I mean, whatever things are bothering you will still be there when you stop bleeding. So you are not dealing with your problems. So you really need to learn how to deal/live with them instead of cutting.

So I encourage you to get help, as I am sure you want to be a lot happier in life. You won't be until you stop cutting for good.

Many people who self harm do not do it to kill themsleves but as a way of getting rid of stress or anxiety or in some cases to punish themselves. Many people do not understand self harm and think that it is for attention - I know it is not.

There is a danger element as you will know I will not say this as if you are totally ignorant but there is also the long term effects the scars on your wedding day or coping with all the looks you may get on a hot summers day. Do you cut your arms or legs? Is it hidden or on show?

One way that I have worked with young people that have done this is to get them to grab handfuls of ice, the pain is similar, it leaves you with the same satisfaction as cutting yourself does, but without the direct harm, scars and wounds.

You do need help, as when you get older and you cannot manage your feeling without cutting it could cause terrible emtional damage, effect your jobs and affect future children and lovers. there is always an underlying reason for cutting and with help you can discover what that is and how else to manage it.
I do hope you get the help and not just that the SUPPORT you need.
Best of luck! CJay

Well....help is such a general word. Help as in counseling and meds....I honestly don't think it works for everybody. People don't understand it...yes, but it is also counterproductive. Forget the physical dangers, you are probably doing it to escape your problems. You could be putting off sorrow, or imploding your anger on yourself. Sure, a person can live with the habit for years and never once come near to death, but they may also live in a miserable world of denial. I know I have.
I don't think the point I would give you would be to stop cutting yourself, but to really understand why you're doing it to yourself. Most likely, you'll find the reasons are trivial or irrelevant. I could never come up with a really good reason to cut myself after I'd really thought about it. Do you really need it? What good is it doing for you? Is that payoff really worth the price you have to pay? You decide for yourself. I'm still deciding. Just try to put your life into perspective...and what you're really planning to get out of it.

I never quite figured this out either. I cut too (on my legs). Cutting gets worse over time. I don't want to die either. But someday if I cut to deep on accident, it might not stop bleeding like it always eventually does. And death is what I'll end up getting. Plus the scars we have will probably be more embarrassing when we're older, right now though I love mine as long as only I can see them...I think we both should get help before we go too far, and cut too deep, on accident or purposely. I want to go swimming with out making excuses, I want to wear shorts in the summer...don't you? Hiding gets harder and excuses get used up over time. I'm sick of having to lie.

"EL UNICO" is an ignorant slob, dont pay atention to him.:
Self mutilation is a "lesser evil" in a way since it gives you emotional release from mental+emotional stress that you cant get other way,and that could lead to suicide if it wasnt for the cutting.. The only problems with cutting is that as you continue doing it, you develope a tolerance to the endorphine high it gives you, you start cutting more and deeper. If you cut deep enough you will need medical attention, like stitches, and sometimes your body might go on shock, that can be very dangerous.

I used to cut myself instead of dealing with emotions or problems that I was facing. Getting help allowed me to deal with the real problem instead of hiding behind physical pain. I'm much happier now and haven't cut myself in over 4 years. It may seem hard to deal with the emotional issues in your life, but you'll never be truly happy until you do, and that's why you need to get help to stop cutting yourself. You can do it!

you need to stop it as it will effect you in later life ie kids/grandkids asking what the scars are, will you lie or tell them the truth uh, also whats the point it hurts like fu ck,
mm what is wrong i wonder erm aha maybe just maybe it could have something to do with the fact that you could get a infected wound or cut nerves and lose feeling or maybe you are sorounded by friends and family who if they knew would be really disapointed :)

It's not healthy. There has got to be a better way to handle your feelings.
Anytime you cut your skin, you are risk for infection, and that it why you should seek help.
