Has anyone here had an '89 Tempo that had problems stalling out constantly? I just got the damn thing (for free) and it does fine (sometimes) when you are driving down a straight road, but if you slow down or go to make a turn onto the next street she stalls. I'm going to be changing the fuel pump and the timing, but was wondering if anyone else has had this sort of problem and if so how did you resolve it or did it not get resolved at all after continuiously fixing/changing out parts? Thanks for your input.
Yes, I know this is posted under Maintenance and Repairs, but maybe someone in this section could help too. Thanks

Try replacing your TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) & IAC (Idle Air Control).
Both will be available aftermarket.

I agree, kinda hard to beat free..
1. fuel filter, PCV valve, air filter.
2. plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor.
3. EGR Valve.
Fuel pump real expensive. probably NOT the answer go for the cheaper items first, kinda silly to replace the long term parts before replacing the everyday tune up parts.
I would also look real hard for a vacuum leak. a cracked hose. one that came off.
I would change in this order. the cost increases with the number. It is an old car that needs a little TLC. one of these items will fix it. I put money on it as the TPS throttle pos sensor were built like steel by ford back then and the sensor would give you issues at high speed also not when the engine is slowing down that is more a vacuum problem or even too much fuel..Do you see smoke BLACK. email me direct if you need more help. Mom's with kids tryin' to get by get to me....

That isn't the problems they usually have but I bet that is the problem. Change the fuel filter while your at it. Tempo's usually have electrical problems and tranny issues. I had a tempo that had problems accelerating because of a bad distributor oil was getting in there. So check that out if your problem isn't resolved after replacing pump and timing belt.
