My advice is no matter what don't put a tv in his room, it will only make things worse and he'll be more likely to stay up ALL night channel hopping. My mum does that and when she wakes up in the morning she complains that she is tired. The brain cannot rest with a tv on.
This said you can't help him unless he wants to help himself, perhaps increased exercise will be good for him.
Make sure he understands how you feel and that your worried about him, other than that i cannot think of any other advice

There is nothing wrong with falling asleep in front of the television, in fact, I usually can't sleep without one. There are a few things...put a television in his room, but this after a while might keep him awake so you need to give him tylenol pm or melatonin to get him to really sleep. I don't really see the problem I guess

A lot of reasons why he doesn't sleep. Age for one thing, his back for another. My dad is 65, has a very bad back, so for the most part, he sits in his recliner and ends up sleeping there. It just seems more comfortable for him. Not only that, he doesn't sleep very much at all. I just think its something they do when they get older. Need to find him a hobby or something to tinker with. They need something to make them feel like they are needed and useful. Thats what keeps them going.

Maybe the chair is more comfortable than his bed? I honestly do not see the problem you face by him sleeping in the livingroom. He more than likely pays the bills - so I would say leave the man in peace!

Hmm. Good question. You could sit down and have a talk with him and say, "Hey... Dad," but first consider WHY this is a problem. Come up with a list of solutions for when you have a talk.
Defenetly talk first.

Start talking non-stop to him that is of little interest to him....................... failing that, get him joining some skittles, darts teams so at least you have the tv some of the time or,get a tv in your room.
