Start leaving unused appliances unplugged until it is time to use them (the tv, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, broiler, etc) then unplug them the minute you are done.
Clean the coils on the back of your fridge. No lights on in the house until sunset. Set your computer to go into standby mode after 5 minutes of not being used.
Turn the heat down or the a/c up. A few degrees won't make a big difference in how you feel, but it will make a big difference in your bill.
Hang your clothes out until they are 75% dry, then toss them in the dryer.
Use energy saving bulbs and don't leave all the lights blazing at night. For example, if you are all in the kitchen eating dinner, every other light in the house should be off.

It's not your kids making it high. The electric company is charging a lot more for power. Plus, the bill you received today is for electricity you used last month. Last month was extremely hot so your usage went up more.
If you still have your bills from this time last year, you could check how much they charged per kilowat hour then and now. You would see an increase in that charge.
I'm a frugal old lady with no kids at home and my bill is ridiculous even with my being careful.

Nope, its not the kids. My bill usually runs about $100 per month, but the last two months its been $250 bucks!! Its because its been super hot this year. Try setting your thermostat at 78 and leaving it there. Don't turn it up or down, just one setting, that should help.

I talked to Florida Power and Light, our local power company.
They told me the appliances that use the most power are in descending order: 1) central heating. 2) air conditioning. 3)refrigerator.4) dryer 5) washer.
If using these less doesn't help out, then maybe you need to have the meter checked. Your power company should do it for free.

Have you thought about changing to a electric key metre???
That way you wont have any nasty bills coming in.
You are in charge of how much you spend and use!!

Contact your power company, especially if your bill is a great deal higher than it usually is.
