Potato salad and mayonnaise are my specialties: I was just thinking about having a jar of mayonnaise for lunch!! You must have ESP!! I havent heard that leaving metal utensils in the PSalad or mayo causes food poisoning, but I use my hands only for PSalad and a straw for the mayonaise. Hope this helps!!!

I don't understand - metal is a mineral that does not harbour bacteria. If you have put the utensil in your mouth first, then yes you can get sick. If you haven't, then no. It would be the bacteria from your mouth - not the utensil.
Metal does not cause a poisonous reaction with egg or milk products - or any food product. If that were the case, a can of evaporated milk or a can of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup would be poisonous.
What will make you very ill is leaving the mayo or potato salad out of the fridge for hours and eating it. Once it hits room temperature, any bacteria present in the mayo will be having lunch before you do!
There are a lot of wingnut answers on here - Botulism (not "botchulism") has nothing to do with metal - it grows in the veggies in the can. You also won't create an "acid" if you use a utensil that has a different type of metal than the bowl. You will increase the pH factor, dunderhead, but mayo is already an acid!
For GAWWD's sake! Where are these guys getting their "scientific information" - a bloody cracker jacks box?? (Sorry I lost it - some ideas on here are downright dangerous!!)
Good Luck!

NO. you only get food poisoning if there is bacteria around to grow in the mayonaise. and if there is bacteria on the metal utensil. like if somebody grabbed the spoon end and innoculated it, and it went into the potato salad, and the potato salad was sitting in a warm room for the bacteria to grow very fast.
the other answers above are wrong.
you don't get food poisoning because of mayo. you get food poisoning because of bacteria growing in mayonaise
and the one answer about batteries and detecting food poisoning when your spoon changes colors...
and the esp guy. jeez.
and the person who said the metal causes botulism, wrong. maybe you were thinking of tetanus. both tetanus and botulism are caused by two different Clostridium bacteria.

The mayo, potatoes, and metal have a chemical reaction that's not good. Always use a glass or plastic bowl to mix and serve it in and always use plastic or silicone utensils to stir and serve it with.

No, you get food poisoning from potato salad because there's mayo in it. Mayo has raw eggs, and if you let it get warm, you'll be salad shooter at both ends!
Do not EVER let anything with mayo in it get warm for any length of time.

I don't know I have never heard either way but I would say don't leave them in, usually no one wants to use a untensil that has been left in a jar anyways because the handle gets the food all over it

I'm not 100% sure, but I know metal in the fridge can lead to a disease called botchulism. Look up botchulism on google. Never put cans in the refridgerator (i.e. juice and fruitcocktail) I'm not sure of the specifics, but it's something in the metal that causes it.

if the utensil is one kind of metal and the pan or plate is another kind of metal , and the food is acidic, then you have just made a battery. The food will taste bad even if it won't poison you, and the fork will discolor.
