There is one story I know of where an ancient Indian tribe (Aztecs-?) played a baseball-type game to the death in honor of one of their deities...They were killed by the other team.
Christians knew they would be killed if they refused to do whatever law was applicable...

There have been many martyrs of many faiths and several who had no faith but died defending principles. Martyrdom is not at all unique to Christianity.

I can't understand the Aztec sacrifice thing. But then again, we live in an age of wonderment, plenty and opportunity. Did the Aztecs live in such a state? Probably not. I'd say that life wasn't worth living back then, not compared to today. Plus legends of the afterlife probably made many eager to get there.
