Police Officers work late shifts. Before the days of the 24 Hour Corner stores when everything closed up early, The only thing you could find open were the Donut shops. Police working the beat were able to stop in here and get coffee and a sugar high to help them make it through the night. Since its the only place open, they also became popular for Officers to hang out at and talk about their night when things got slow. Now days it is mostly just in the movies. Officers can communicate with each other via cell phones and in car computers. There is a 24 hour corner store around every bend where the Officers can fill up on an assortment of things to help them keep going. As my brother stated above however, Us South Texas police like Taquitos better than Donuts, and we need the added belt room for all our cool toys.

It's just a stereotype. Like all Asians knowing karate and all southern people being slow. You just have to get past it.
Not sure how this all started. I don't care for donuts myself. I would rather have a bagel or muffin with some good coffee.
But I will say this. Most cops do know where the best and cheapest restaurants are.

This is a strange Phenomenan, in the eraly days of doughnut makeing ,many street cops would eat the delicious little treat, any over time it was thought to give the ''Average cop'' almost supernatural physical and mental capacity, thus transforming him into a ""Super Cop'''' with the keen abilty to spot crime and thwart any attempt to break the law .....Some say its an urban legend but many Officers still hold true to this belief and often consume large quanities of doughnuts while on duty. .... I sugest next time you see a police officer you ask him ''' Hey copper had any doughnuts latley '''' if he tries to arrest you or gets hostile chances are he has in fact eaten some doughnuts within the last hour or so .............

I think it's stereotypical for police officers and especially NY police officers at that. It's just one of those things like because I wear glasses I must be a brianiac trying to build a computer of the future. you know it's not in real life, just one of those things probaly created by Spielburg or something.

Down here in South Texas its Taquitos not doughnuts. But the best answer I heard was from my brother who is a Cop here in Texas.
"We need the expanding waistline so we have room to add on all the new equipment they keep making us carry"
(His Dept. just got the new Tasers and they all got certified)

Umm, I like doughnuts very much and I'm not in law enforcement. When I was a kid I used to grab bear claws two at a time and get them lodged right in my upper regions!

The sugar probably gives a boost of energy to those long hours.
