Go to Dr. Phil or Maury Povich.

Fear is OK but irrational fear can get you hurt. Unless you want to like spiders (I love um) -OR- you are irrationally afraid of them, there is really no reason to try not to fear them.

Now if you freak out and run into sliding glass doors trying to get away then you really need to speak to a psychologist.

If you are not quite that bad, why don't you buy a book about spiders and get to know them? That would go a long way in helping to ease the fear.

All spiders are poisonous to some extent. Now days it is very unlikely that you would die from a spider bite unless you have some weird allergic reaction. For the most part its as bad as a bee sting. For Widows, its like a bad case of the flu for a couple weeks or so. And recluses, like a small third degree burn that takes a while to manifest. But you probably wont die! Think about bees, they fly around and get in your hair! They'll sting the hell out of you every time and you have just a good of a chance of dying from them as spiders...allergic reaction.

Spiders are truly magnificent animals if you stop an think about what they are capable of.

Best of luck to you.

Is it a fear or a phobia? A fear is easier to get over. A phobia is something that makes you break into a cold sweat and sends you into a panic attack. That sort of fear would require you to go see a therapist who specializes in helping people over their phobias.
IMHO, having a healthy fear of spiders isn't a bad thing...you've seen what can happen if you aren't careful. Here's something you can try: go to a pet store that has tarantulas. Go and watch them from whatever distance you feel comfortable. Continue doing this as often as you can, each time getting closer. Also talk to the pet store people. Eventually, when you feel ready, ask if you can touch one. Once you feel comfortable, on another visit even, ask if you can hold one. Keep in mind that it isn't the big spiders you have to watch out for!

I googled and found a link that might help you. Also check out some books in the library that deal with overcoming phobias. I know because I'm kinda scared of spiders myself though there aren't any black widows or brown recluses here.

Experts agree that cognitive behavioral therapy holds a lot of success in curing phobias. With this kind of treatment, you essentially retrain your thoughts and your body’s responses to whatever is causing your fear. You also go through steps that expose you to your fear, gradually increasing that exposure as you become more comfortable and confident.

If this sounds too scary and time-consuming to you, you may want to consider hypnosis, either alone or combined with therapy. Hypnosis allows you to get into your subconscious mind, where your fears are stored, and change those unhealthy thought patterns to healthier, more positive ones. You’ll still have the healthy fear that keeps you from doing something dangerous, but your phobia will be gone—and so will its control over your life.

I would go to the insectarium at your zoo or better yet, get one as a pet and keep it. Our family had a rusty kneed tarantula as a pet for years and after a while you stop seeing it as a spider and see it as a pet. Unless you are a cricket, then you're screwed.

Have you seen Batman Begins? Think of something more dangerous- ex. cannibals, ninjas, politicians. If you have spiders in your house, I recommend investing in an exterminator. Maybe you should lock yourself in your room and hope for the best. Fear of anything but God is rediculous.

Why would you want to overcome it? I think it's a very healthy fear to have of something that can kill you.
