Well, that depends on the relationship, I guess. Sometimes the man can make more money, and the woman is great at handling all of the details at home. Sometimes a woman is more career-driven and her male counterpart is able to effectively meet the demands of running the household.
When it gets tricky is when one person in the relationship is expected to earn the income AND run the household. That's just not fair.
I am a big fan of division of labor, and have had to work HARD to explain to my husband that though he works full-time and I only work part-time, he should still pitch in and help with certain things. He's coming around, but that mindset is hard to overcome.
When it comes right down to it, communication about expectations and the overall dynamic of the relationship in question should determine the answer.

The bread winner can be either. Whoever has the best education and can earn the most money. So it can be a joint effort or just one half of the couple. The Mom can stay home or the Dad or the child can go to daycare. Whatever makes the couple happiest is the right way to go.

In my household, its both of us. Although, being the wife, I tend to make more money than he does (go figure), but its a team effort. Also, it depends on kids too. Its expensive having kids, and at the same time, the little ones need a parent around for the first year or so. I think thats whats wrong with the kids today, they're thrown into day care because both parents have to work just to make ends meet.

Ok, call me old fashioned, but I really think that that woman should be at home raising the children if it is at all possible.
Our society has become a disposable society...where we can just drop something off for someone else to handle while we take care of #1.
Some families need 2 workers to support the household, other families need 2 workers to support extravagant spending.
Get rid of that extra car and trips to Rio and spend time with your kids!

Whoever has the better job and benefits can provide more. If I worked and earned 250K while hubby earned 3 bucks an hour as a pool boy.. He wouldnt be the sole breadwinner.
It also depends on if they want some one to stay home with the kids to raise them.
Men can do it too.

Whichever one has the best chance at making a good living. If the woman can make $100,000 a year and the man can only make $8 and hour, that is a no brainer.

if one is going to stay home unpaid, and BOTH want to stay home then who ever makes more money for the family should work. If one definitely wants to stay home and the family can afford to do this than who ever wants to work should work and visa verse.
If NO one wants to stay home, then both should take a job where they'll be happy. So the time with the kids after work is happy, fun and productive!
this is a complex situation and answer, i think its important or a family to sit down and analyze the goals and money situation. For example, I stay home but for me to do this we as a family have to make financial cuts. If my hubby was not willing to do this than staying home weather i wanted to or not would be virtually impossible! (he also doesn't want to stay home and happens to make 2x more than my career so it was an easy choice)

Both. But if one is the breadwinner, they need support from the other, such as cooking/cleaning/taking care of the kids. ect.
