A lot of things, just as perhaps might be the case with women?
It is hard to say without knowing more of the situation but I'll do my best to answer your question.
It could be due to personal trouble he's going through; if he feels hurt by a person then he may emotionally withdraw from that person and/or other people.
I've done this when someone I cared about was insensitive in how they approached me about a problem/request that they had.
I was upset with them because they told me that there was a problem and that other people felt there was a problem (the person didn't identify the others but was vague, leading me to wonder if perhaps it was a majority or the whole group who had a problem).
The way they approached me caused me to feel singled out (even though they admitted there were others that were involved with the cause of the problem) and to feel like perhaps everyone that they'd mentioned were against me.
I was also hurt because there were other issues between that person and myself. I know they didn't intend harm (they apologized when they thought I got angry at them) but they showed insensitivity towards me and approached the situation in a less than careful manner.
There are other reasons why a man might emotionally withdraw; if he's tired or burdened with worries, if he's been betrayed or perhaps if he's the betrayer...
Hope this helps a bit...

A lot of things - stress, for one. Guys often like to work problems out on their own. If you badger them or asking them 'what's wrong?' too much that can make them withdraw emotionally too.
If he's feel emasculated or 'less of a man' for some reason...sexual problems, work problems, feeling like he can't please a girlfriend, etc...that can make that happen.
The best thing you can do is LET him withdraw but be open to his 'return'.

when a man starts to with draw from a person it might be that he is getting to close and he is afraid of comment and he is not really ready to go to the next step or he is unconformable with him self security with a man is a big thing and he will try and do what ever it takes to have it that way and when it is not the way he is expecting it to be he will go side way's and back and forth tell it is earthier gone or tell its fixed

Not feeling valued by those around him. Not being allowed to express an opinion which is listened to. Not being loved.... and it isn't just limited to men.

WHEN YOU ACT NEEDY OR HOLD HIM RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR FEELINGS. WHEN YOU CRITICIZE HIM, SHOW DISAPPOINTMENT, OR HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HIM. WHEN YOU NO LONGER CHALLENGE HIM, FLIRT WITH HIM, MAKE HIM FEEL SAUGHT AFTER. WHEN HE FEELS INADEQUATE BECAUSE YOU DON'T APPRECIATE HIM. WHEN HE FINDS ANOTHER WAY TO MEET HIS NEEDS BESIDES YOU (EMOTIONAL CHEATING). WHEN YOU NEED HIM TO VALIDATE YOUR FEELINGS. WHEN YOU TRY TO FIX OR CHANGE HIM. WHEN YOU TRY TO CONVINCE HIM THAT YOUR VIEWS ARE CORRECT, AND YOU ARE RIGHT.
