We have seen more "bugs" in our flour this year because of the weather. Have you noticed that most recipes ask you to sift your flour? This comes from the times of our grandmothers and great grandmothers when flour came in cloth sacks. Those bugs that we usually do not find, they found regularly and had to sift out, along with water that seeped in and clumped the flour (and sugar).

If you would like to rid yourself of these little buggers, I suggest the following: buy an air-tight plastic (or glass) container like rubbermaid or some other well known brand. The important thing is the seal at the top. If the seal isn't great, you will still get bugs. Buy your flour and sugar only in quantities that you will use in 3 months or less (quality). Place a ziploc baggie inside the airtight container (2nd layer of protection) and pour the flour or sugar into the baggie. Seal the baggie shut removing as much air as possible. Then seal the air-tight lid on the container.

Many of these bugs have come in your flour, whether you want to admit it or not. The airtight container will kill them off giving you the flour "of your dreams". In reality you still will have dead bugs in some way, shape or form in your flour, they just haven't had a chance to grow. Too gross?

I buy organic in small quantities. Whole wheat flour will become rancid and attract more pests quicker because it has more wheat germ left. Bleached flour will last longer because there is very little wheat germ left, but there is also very little nutrition left. You just have to pick and choose your battles.

Where did you buy the flour? If you bought it at different stores the bugs are coming from your home unless the stores share the same supplier. If you bought all three bags at the same store, change stores. The store or the supplier is most likely infested if you have thoroughly cleaned at home.

store the flour in an air tight container. I keep my open bags of flour and sugar in a zip top bag.

When you buy the flour sift it and put in a air tight container. Those bugs are there from packaging. Once in an airtight container put in the freezer for a few days and that will stop it.

it's not likely you're getting them from the flour. Sounds like it's in your cabinets. Try putting your flour in a sealed plastic container - rubbermaid or something like that.

Either that or buy your flour from a different store.

They are called flour weevils and they occur and hatch even in recently store bought flour. I suggest keeping your flour in the refrigerator to keep their eggs from hatching also, try another brand of flour too.

Keep your flour in a sealed, air tight container after you open the bag (such as a tupperware or plastic container). Eating the bugs after cooking is not harmful...

They were in the flour before it was packaged and just hatched in the bag. To prevent this, you can keep the bags of flour in the fridge.

I had that problem years ago, and ever since I buy flour now, I keep it in the refrigerator. I've never had a problem again.
