I have been diabetic since 1971 and I had a kidney/panceas transplant in 1995. I am 59 years old and I take about fifty pills each day, including diuretics and steroids.

I think that due to your special circumstances, you may want to check with your personal physician for a referral to a nutritionist as well as a personal trainer or physical therapist specializing in cases such as your's.

My son was in a car accident 5 years ago and had a spinal cord injury which left him paralyzed from the waist down C7 T1. He also sustained numerous internal injuries involving the intestines and his erectus (abs) muscle was severed. He has been going to the gym regulary for the past 4 years and has built up his upper body strength and looks like a weight lifter. He does have a small pouch belly and that of course is due to the pop and junk food snacking. That weight is slowly coming off, and I mean slowly because, as you know, he can't exercise the bottom half of his body. He does eat lots of vegetables and fruits now and follows his doctor's orders for a healthy diet. He is now about 6 feet tall and weights190 lbs. I suggest that your best bet would be to talk to your trainer at the gym (if you have one - and if not, start working out. PSST - if your accident happened in Michigan, your car insurance company has to pay for a gym membership). Talk to your doctors also to have them set you up on a special diet, especially since you are diabetic. Hope this helps.

OK. If ur really serious about losing the weight read this:
Eat only mainly meat. Seriously. I know that might sound stupid but its true. Also meat requires no insulin to break it down so if ur diabetic it wont be a problem. You can also eat a limited number of green leafy vegetables (broccoli) and berries (blueberry's strawberry's).

Do not cheat at all or u will lose no weight. Seriously. But if u actually stick 100% to this diet u will drop in weight so quick u wont believe it.

At least just try it for a week. I guarantee you will have lose weight! and the good news is you can eat as much meat as you want. BUT....NO BREAD..At ALL NEVER NEVER EVER.. NO BREAD..no hamburger buns..no hotdog buns...no dinner roll

Google "Weigh Down." It's a weight loss program that allows you to eat just about anything, but it's based in the idea that you should only eat when you're hungry (when your stomach is telling you to eat) and you should stop when you're full. My first wife lost over 100 pounds on Weigh Down before the car accident that claimed her life, and there are hundreds of other success stories out there, including people who are wheelchair-bound that have lost 100 pounds or more.

First of all eat the right foods to help you loose weight. You didn't say if you can move your upper and or bottom extremities but if you can then you are able to exercise in the chair. Hand weights you can hold in your hands, leg weights you can wrap around your legs and do lifts and curls. But the main thing is a good diet, healthy diet. By loosing the weight you will see that all the meds you do take will become less and less. Good luck to you. It will be hard, but your life is more than worth it.

Get out of the chair and move. If you dont you will die very soon.
Do what you can and do more the next day. You can do it. As long as you're breathing and have a hearbeat you can do it.
