I have a motivation problem as well. So I started small and so far I've lost 30 pounds by doing 2 things. I started with spreading things around the house ...finding ways to force myself up and down the stairs as many times a day as I could. It's amazing how that helps. The second thing was just watching what I ate. I ate smaller meals following the food guide...a little bit from every category but not too much...and I only allowed myself sweets (my real weakness) once a week. The longer I did it the better I felt the easier it was to keep it going. I am now a firm believer that proper eating habits and regular exercise are all you need to be healthy and start losing weight.

Read the book, Body-for-LIFE, by Bill Phillips. It is an extremely motivational book. It is not about dieting, it is about changing your entire lifestyle. The way you eat, think, and feel about yourself.
I hate reading books, this one is around 200 pages. It includes workouts with pictures, food planning for each day, the healthiest food choices when shopping, etc. It has it all. I was hooked on the book and finished it in two days. It changed my life.
Once you have read that, there is also a cookbook for the program, Eating-for-LIFE. It includes wonderful recipes, that are easy, also with pictures of each item so that when you go shopping you know exactly what to look for.
Please at least try this. You will feel so complete once you have. By the way. There are also before and after pictures in the book, they are not a lie. My friend is one of the transformations in the magazine and she did the program without any supplements.
P.S. - There is also a huge cash reward every year for the best transformation. Good luck, I know you can do this! Me and a few of my very overweight friends did. They are completely changed for LIFE!

Your best bet is to definitely exercise but as far as the motivation, you should probably consider the fact of disease or death a motivation.=0/ Try going for atleast a 15 minute walk everyday until you lose a little weight and then maybe going to a gym. I havefound that watching others exercise make me want to. Plus you can make friends there and then go together which is even better because then you really don't think about the exercise that much when you are talking to your friend on the treadmill. Watch what you are eating. Vegetables are awesome, pretty much eat as much as you want but don't get toooo carried away. Also GREEN TEA is a godsent. It kicks up your metabo naturally and detoxs your body. Goodluck!=0)

Hi
First and foremost you have to want to do something about your situation and asking for help is a positive first step.
Never underestimate the power of walking. Begin with a short walk around the block and every day increase your territory by a block so that you ease yourself into the exercise and don't cause untoward problems.
Eventually you will be going for a daily hour-long walk. A brisk walk, not a "gawking in the windows" walk. You will want to do this every day, rain or shine, at a time of day that lets you feel most comfortable. You will want to take along water so that you don't dehydrate yourself, but not snacks - however, if you have a tendency to any metabolic trouble, such as hypoglycemia, then make sure you are prepared, with a small granola bar that has some amount of sugar (instant energy) and fat (long-term energy).
As to diet: We don't know what you eat now, what triggers your eating, etc. so let's try a generalized suggestion:
Find out the calorie range for your age and height and level of exercise.
Let's say it is 1,600 calories. INSTEAD of having the calories in three meals, split them up so that you have FIVE or SIX SMALL MEALS. You will be keeping your hunger at bay because you are constantly eating low-value calories. You will not have the sudden spurts of energy followed by ravenous hunger when the sugars have been metabolized. And make sure that you keep an amount of fat/oil in the diet, because:
one gram of fat gives you FOUR TIMES the energy as a gram of sugar; moreover it is metabolized slowly and thus provides a slow, steady supply of energy.
MOREOVER: your meals should containg MOUNTAINS of fresh vegetables. The more you have to chew them, the better. Whole grain products - ditto. One slice of very grainy bread may have more calories than a slice of white bread but you will be getting higher-quality nutrients, and the fact that it is grainy ensures that you will be chewing it longer. The more slowly and thoroughly you chew your food, the easier it is to appease your hunger - basically you are tricking your "appestat" which is the part of the brain that acts for hunger the way a thermostat acts for heat in the house.
MOTIVATION: Remember that it will take a while, but you WILL begin to feel better. By walking for an hour a day you will be raising your metabolism; by eating slowly, and over a number of smaller meals you will continually keep your mind sensing that you are not hungry. (Whatever you do, though, DO NOT EAT MORE and DON'T EAT LESS, either, because then you are setting yourself up for failure)
Don't expect to see much change, very quickly. You won't just be dieting, you will be changing your entire philosophy and approach about eating, and it is better to do this slowly; otherwise you might try to do too much and you'll end up right where you started.
Other ideas you might consider: Cover or remove all the mirrors in your house; put away all your cosmetics etc and all the clothes you cannot wear because that amounts to torture. Get yourself an inexpensive outfit to wear on your walks; have a shower after your walk, and allow yourself to enjoy the fact that you are on the road to a better life.
Good Luck!

As far as exercising goes, there is no easy way. You just have to do it. But start w/ walking. That is always the best route; it is so good for your heart. Intensify it a little bit every day--start w/ just walking a short walk, next add a little longer and a little faster, etc.. Don't forget stretching! Slow, though, not bouncy stretching. Get an exercise ball and a video, those are awesome.
Eating---Don't forget the cardinal rule! Moderation! Eat the bad stuff in very small servings, and get full on good stuff- fresh veggies and fruit, lean protein (tuna, chicken), and lots of whole grain complex carbs. Try cereal w/out sugar or popcorn. Just do not try to starve yourself. We are made to eat.
Hope that helps!

Hey. Nice to hear from you. My husband is also very obese. It's hard for him too to remain motivated, because he has so much weight to lose. We have incorporated little things in his day to day routine. They don't look like much, but together they help him to move and burn calories. Maybe it'll give you some ideas of stuff you can do in your life. So here are some of them...
1. he sold his car and bought a stick shift
2. he doesn't watch TV in bed anymore, but sits in a chair
3. he switched packages and now has less channels
4. he packed away his PlayStation (for now)
5. we got a dog and he walks her to the curb and back
6. he does a lot of gardening, especially since the dog destroyed the drip system and he has to water the plants every day
7. he keeps bottles of water in the fridge that he drinks instead of soda
8. he buys whole grain products and low fat milk, no red meat or sausages
9. he eats a big bowl of Corn Flakes before dinner or eating out.
My husband still wears 3XL of 4XL, but he feels a lot better. I hope you can use some of the things we came up with. Good luck.

Get yourself a very attractive personal trainer of the oppisite sex. That way you will look forward to meeting with them and working out.
Go to Body For Life on the internet and use their diet. Also the befor and after success stories there can be very motivating.

I suggest going to www.sparkpeople.com and signing up there. It's completely free and has all sorts of things. Meal plans, exercise demos, food and exercise trackers, community support, etc. Check it out, I've been there for a month and have lost 7lbs, but a lot of people I know from there have lost way more than that. One lady lost 16lbs in 3 weeks! All you have to do is apply yourself. I recommend joining a group in the community for support because everyone is so encouraging when you're having a bad day/week.
Good luck and remember, YOU CAN DO IT!

You pointed out a key factor. I don't think any diet is good if you don't get motivation. Set yourself a goal and plan a really nice reward for yourself (besides feeling and looking better). Like a trip to the Caribbean or something you can afford.

If you have no motivation, you won't stick with anything for very long. To motivate yourself, buy yourself a beautiful outfit that would fit a thin person. Hang it where you will see it every day. Also, hang a picture on the wall, of a slim person. Put your scale on the floor in front of it and work towards your new goal. That should motivate you just fine! Additionally, you could try a hypnotist.
