Speaking in tongues in praise is fine, unless you are in a church where they don't believe in it--a matter of simple courtesy.

Paul says you shouldn't give a speech in tongues during a service unless there is someone there to interpret it. Sometimes that can be the speaker himself.

There is a certain amount of "forcing it" the first time you speak in tongues (especially if there are a bunch of people trying to "help" you), but after that it is like turning on a faucet. I have also found it to be "catching" in a group, like a yawn.

You have no earthly idea what you are saying, so when you are alone with God is when this gift is most useful, both to pray correctly and to strengthen your faith.

I found myself getting lazy and going into tongues in a group setting simply because I couldn't concentrate enough to join in the "Chinese school" type of prayer (in English) which is also a habit of Pentecostals. It's sort of like smoking cigarettes to protect yourself from other people in the group who are smoking weed.

Basically, this gift is a tool for prayer and praise, no more, no less, and a good one, tho not necessary. It is not a "marker" of anything, much less salvation or the baptism of the Spirit.

This answer is a mite disjointed, but I hope it helps.

If you look at the reference in the bible to the occasion of when speaking in tongues happened, Act 2:4-7

The people were filled with holy spirit and started speaking in tongues. Many people visiting Jerulsalem at that time for the passover had come from all nations Act 2:5

The were bewildered because the people speaking in tongues were actually speaking in numerous different languages, so they were hearing the Good news being preached in their own languages. Acts 2:6

So speaking in tongues in the bible denotes speaking a different language that can be understood, for the purpose of delivering important bible messages. But the ability to do this instantaneously was a gift of spirit from God originally.

The first century christens didn't rant and rave. If you look further on in acts it mentions the different dialects and languages that were heard.

I forced myself to speak in tongues. I did not believe in it. I only heard about tongues one week earlier and I thought that they were crazy! I received the baptism, but I did not think that they expected me to speak in tongues. I only spoke two words so that the Pastor would let me get off the stage. He got excited and told me that I got it. He told me to go home and come up with some more words, so I did. I threw many words out because they sounded like another foreign language and that I thought that I was stealing from. I ended up with eight or so words. 3 days later, I called up the Pastor. I was mad! He lied to me, he told me that I would be filled with joy and peace. He also said that I would quit drinking and smoking. Nothing happened! He asked if i prayed in tongues, I said No! I told him that I never heard of such a thing and that it wasn't necessary. I then told me that; You don't have anything to lose. He was right, but I decided to pray in tongues to prove him wrong! Later that night, I did. And all of a sudden, God possessed me! WOW! I did not expect that. My whole life changed! The next day, I did quit everything. It was as if I never smoked before. I have never been happier. I have dreams and visions and my eyes are open to the supernatural! I found out later, that my new tongue was praising God in Hebrew, also the words that I threw away! I thank my God more than you all that I speak in tongues. I have become one with God! I speak in tongues everyday! Keep pressing in. Sometimes we have to step out in faith first and God will meet you half way.

The phenomena of speaking in tougues is something that is becoming more popular in some churches today, their members say God is speaking through them in an unknown language and sending some sort of devine revelation, but the truth is, when God was done writing the New Testament He was finished sending any more devine revelation. He teaches us this in Revelations 22:18 "For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book." Churches that teach God is still sending messages through tongues, visions or dreams are teaching a false gospel. I suggest you stay clear of them.

I do not know what I was saying, It is a pure prayer or discussion, and unless you pray for the gift of interpretation only God knows what you said. I had heard of it for many years, but have only had the gift for about 6 years or so. I can do it when alone, and it never sounds the same to me- like a different language all the time. I can call upon it when I want, but do not do this lightly.

When speaking in tongues we pray with our spirit and not our mind. The gift of speaking in tongues is to build us up. I speak in tongues more privately than what I do publicly. I do not fake it, or force it, there is no reason to.

Speaking in tongues are the least of the gifts, but it is a gift which we should eagerly desire nevertheless.

speaking in tongues is a gift from GOD. everyone doesn't receive that gift. and some can understand it ,but it is the HOLYSPIRIT who gives you the understanding. my son has the gift. speaking in tongues is the SPIRIT praying through you. and it is the HOLYSPIRIT who gives the understanding to some. my son said he does not know what the SPIRIT is praying through him. when we pray together as a family the feeling is so awesome you can't put it in words. there is a verse in the bible that said there is no human words to describe it.

It's in the bible, 13 times. I see it has a prayer too God and a sign to the unbeliever. We find no where that it ended or it was only for a time etc...but I find the (biblical) subject extremely interesting..I loved this subject in bible school

I don't know what I'm saying ( unless God gives me the interpretation or someone else does). Fake it , no. Sometimes it just happens.
