I have had both and still prefer a wood-burning fireplace:
a: Pros for wood burning:
--the great sound of a crackling fire place
--the nice sight of real wood burning
--the smell of a fireplace burnig wood
b: Cons of wood burning:
--Constantly buying a cord or two of wood and storing it
--the cleaning up of ashes (somewhat messy)
--cleaning the front of the fireplace when smoke does not always go into the fireplace chimney
c: Pros of gas:
--Much cleaner
--No need to buy and store wood
d: Cons of gas:
--Cost of gas might be higher in most areas of the country
--One does not see the beauty of wood burning
--One does not hear the sound of a crackling fire place

Gas is more convenient, less work, less pollutants and if you get a ventless fireplace, nearly 100% efficient (no heat loss up the chimney). However, wood gives off a pleasant aroma and has a soothing sound while burning.
Sometimes, people opt for wood stoves which gives the pleasant scent, has an efficient furnace, but offers less sound ambiance, but the tradeoff is a huge stove in the room.
Consider all the advantages, disadvantages and what you would like before investing.

GAS!!!! Less mess.......gives off better heat... looks better....no cleanup. You can get gas logs that look "very" authentic. I've seen ones that I could not tell the difference from wood. A cord of wood runs about $150. You may spend alittle more in gas,,,,but it is well worth it. You don't have to lug wood in from outside every time you want a fire and you don't have to keep adding logs. Turn it on and sit back and enjoy it. Also, won't leave your house smelling like a bone fire!!!!!

Gas
- Less polluting (burns more cleanly)
- Cleaner (no ashes or soot buildup)
- Safer (the fire is more contained)
- Cheaper (gas is cheap compared to wood, expecially when you consider delivery cost)
- Fewer pests (wood piles attract a variety of animals and insects)
However, wood has a nicer 'feel' than gas, it is warmer, and has that nice 'glow' and so everyone prefers wood. I must admit that I also prefer wood. But, in this modern age, gas really makes much more sense.

I've had both, and I like wood much better. It's a lot, lot cheaper to burn wood. Plus you get a little wood smell in your house, which I really like. Also, it's fun to keep the fire going in my opinion. Wood burning is much cheaper, but a gas would require less maintainance.

We have both, but I recommend wood burning, because you get heat coming from the logs. With the gas, it is very expensive, looks nice but just not the same as wood logs. And, with wood you can always roast marshmallows, and even cook if you had to.

I have had both. Wood is messy and leaves ashes that have to
be cleaned out often. I had terrible allergies from the wood.
I have a gas log now, have had in my previous homes. It is clean
and heats constant with out replacing the burning wood.

wood ...gas will cost you more and not the same heat. when using wood get those ones you burn to clean it. when not in use shut the heat duck so you won't lose the heat you have. make sure opened all the way before starting your fire. imporant to have someone come out and check your chimney it doesn't cost much. it is better to be safer then sorry.i had mine checked about every five years

I always like the classic stone wood-burning fire place. Besides, there no chance of a dangerous gas leak.
