A gift is a gift, and I don't believe the place of purchase or the amount spent negates that in any way. As usual, it is the thought that counts, and the items you purchased may have much more practical use than some of the things the couple may have registered for. The intent of a wedding gift is to give couples what they will need to get started in their new life -- not to load down their china cabinet with pretty but impractical pieces they will absolutely never use.

With that being said, the spirit of giving is struck a blow when one feels they must stoop to "lying" about where the gift was obtained. I've always found it rather tacky myself to have gifts wrapped directly from the stores where the store's name is directly on the packaging, even when the item was purchased at that particular store, and I believe putting an item in another store's packaging is definitely out of order.

No I don't think so. I may not have put them into a Pottery Barn box and bag. I would have just gift wrapped them myself with some really pretty wrappings. If they are worried about where they came from or how much they cost they don't sound like very good friends. What matters is that you gave them a gift. I don't think your evil. You just want to impress them and save some cash.

A gift is a gift.. no matter how much you spend. I dont think though that you should put them into a Pottery barn box and bag leading them to believe that is where they were purchased.
What if they really didnt like them and decided to return them? Im sure they would be pretty embarassed at the store when their return was denied.

Its not wrong to get a gift from the dollar store but putting it in a Pottery Barn box-that's wrong

Depends on your motive. If you are going to a very nice elaborate wedding and you don't like the couple very much so you get them a cheap gift, that is not nice. If it's a modest wedding, and the couple knows you are struggling financially, then by all means, any gift is thoughtful. But it seems to me you that if you can afford to shop at Pottery Barn for yourself (otherwise, why would you have a box/bag from there?) but choose to buy cheap dollar store gift, you must not like the couple very much, so why even bother going? In either case, trying to fool this couple by wrapping a cheap present in brand-name box is pretty tacky.

Lol.. Evil, no.. Cheap, kinda. I've done similar (Walmart). Though I didn't put it in a diff bag, I just put it in a basket and put a bottle of wine and some candles in with. Kinda like a picnic basket. It came out cute, but there is some nice stuff at the Dollar Tree. Just be careful as to what you get from there.

When I registered for gifts I told people to use them as ideas and get them from places that they could afford, rather than going broke trying to get something they couldn't afford. I didn't care where the gifts came from. I personally would have been happier to have had gifts from Dollar Stores - then I would be more comfortable using them daily or more often rather than keeping them put away behind locked cabinets so that they don't get broken.

I think it's acceptable, however, I'd go the extra mile and get some glass paint or frosting stuff and personalize them a bit more...perhaps the name of the couple and the date of the wedding?
The price of the gift isn't important; it's the personalization that makes the gift memorable and valued.

Evil is a strong word. I would suggest you don't lie, but you don't have to say were you got it from. By plain white box and some nice tissue paper and a nice gift bag.

Now if you have money to buy them somehting nice and you were just being cheep then I would say that you are wrong for that, but not evil.

Hey not at all!

The amount of money you spend for a person's gift is not important. What is important is the sincerity with which you give your best wishes to that person on his/her special occasion.

I would always prefer someone to come with a Dollar shop glassware, and spend quality time with me on the special day, rather than some SNOB who gifts me something expensive, and keeps reminding me of my inferior social status by a condescending attitude. I hope you get the picture.
