Because diesel engines are fuel injected.. if you raise the air breathing portion of the engine.. like wiht a snorkel type thing.. they can drive submerged under water.

This is also a big reason why diesels are used in boats. Diesel fuel is also less flammable than regular gasoline.

Diesel engines can also run on jet fuel. This is why the military loves diesel vehicles.. because they can use the same fule for aircraft and vehicles. which is why the military recently commissioned a diesel dirtbike to be built.

Diesel engines last longer than gas engines because they are built so strong... they need to be built so strong to handle the higher pressures they need to operate. They need this high pressure to ignite the diesel fuel without the spark plugs gas engines need.

Isn't diesel a petroleum product, so technically is a petroleum engine? If you are looking for the difference between a conventional gasoline engine vs. a diesel engine, basically a gasoline engine takes in a fuel and air charge, compresses it, then ignites the mixture with a spark to drive the power stroke of the engine. A diesel compresses air injects the diesel mixture and the combustion is a result of the heat within the cylinder. See the website howthingswork.com for more information.

Primitive diesel engines were very dirty - especially particulates. But using a turbo-diesel engine has made them much cleaner.

MPG & cost are also different for gas & diesel. Some countries have different tax rates for the fuel. In the UK, there is also a category of "Red Diesel", that is for agricultural use only - tractors Land Rovers, combine harvesters etc.

Petroleum engines have spark plugs that ignite the gas. Diesel engines don't need spark plugs, the gas is ignited by super-compression of the fuel/air mixture.

The way I understand it is the gasoline engine explosion is caused by a spark that ignites the gasoline/air mixture. A diesel engine uses pressure to cause the explosion. I could be wrong on the diesel.

Petrol engines use petrol and diesel engines use diesel. Petrol engines use an electric spark to ignite the the fuel-air mixture. Diesel engines use compression to ignite the fuel-air mixture.

Petrol engines use ignition plugs but not diesel as it burn when get compressed,, also Petrol is more lighter than diesel which can evaporate faster but diesel is more heavy and oily so diesel are good for heavy duty engines as truks

No spark plugs. They use a glow plug to ignite the diesel start your car. The engines are also turbo charged because if they weren't they could not get out of their own way
