Hiccups occur when a spasm contracts the diaphragm, a large sheet of muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. This spasm causes an intake of breath that is suddenly stopped by the closure of the vocal cords (glottis). This closure causes the characteristic "hiccup" sound.

It is NOT an esophageal spasm.

I always heard it was a messed up signal running along the nerve between your brain and abdomen. There is no way to get rid of them besides waiting.

It's a disturbance in the frenic nerve in your diaphram. There are numerous ways to rid yourself of them, a sponful of sugar, hold your berath, place your fingers betweeen your eyes and brow bone (eyes closed)-this will help to "disturb" your optic nerve, kinda like shorting out your electrical system! Good luck getting rid of them!!

Esophageal Spasms due to irritation.
You can use a spoon to depress the tongue, and swallow water without using the tongue to sooth the spasms.

i imagine it assume to do with something with that massive gasp of air you're taking once you get scared. because retaining your breath helps and once you get scared you inhale deeply.
