I have been out of the military for over a year now, my AKO no longer works, I lost the copy of my DD214 that I had, where can I get another one? I have been asking around and no one seems to know, I need this for my GI Bill money, and I can't complete the form with out it, any help would be greatly appreciated.

In the past veterans were advised to have their DD214 recorded in the county they went home to after their release. If you did that, contact the county recorder and you should be able to get a copy there. If you used a DD214 to apply for other benefits, such as educational or medical, that agency may be able to give you a copy.

Getting a copy of your DD214 is easier than ever....
the fastest way to obtain a copy is through the National Archives, National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) on their website at http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html. They are the records custodian for most discharged and retired members of all branches of service. Expect a two to three week wait to receive your record, but ordering online may speed up the process.

If you do not have internet access you can order a copy by mailing or faxing a Standard Form 180 (SF-180) to The National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records, 9700 Page Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63132, Fax Number 314-801-9195. The SF-180 is available in our District Offices, and may be obtained by fax from the NPRC by calling (301) 837-0990 from a fax machine - follow their directions and request document number 2255.

You can request such records at this web site.... I have requested and received my fathers, and father in laws from here. There is a form you fill out and send or fax back to them... but all that is explained on this web page.

When I got out of the AF, I was told the DD214 is more important than your actual discharge certificate and safe guard it. I keep copies at home, but the original is in a safe deposit box.

Go to www.va.gov and there is a link for forms and also a search box if needed. There is a form to fill out and mail to your respective branch's headquarters/personnel requesting a replacement DD-214, you can request either the short or long or both form(s).

every county should have a Veterans Service Officer. Contact your local courthouse and they should be able to direct you. You should contact them (vet rep) anyways, there are sometimes new benefits available to you that they know of but you don't.

How the hell did you lose your DD 214!? Before I got out of the service, they kept pounding and pounding the importance of the DD 214 and to have plenty of extra copies made and to keep them safeguarded. How can you perform well in school if you can't even pay attention to simple instructions?
