I am sorry to tell you but there is no "funny" story about stealing something. I like to hear that you have at least tried o go back into the store in order to pay for the merchandise.I work in retail and I have to tell you that what you did is a bad thing(well, you probably know that yourself) but please don't let this become to a habit. It was the fault of the lazy cashier who did not look into or under the shopping cart to check what is left. You have been in a good luck not to get caught.

My husband made a rule when our daughter was little and still rode in her carseat in the front of the cart: No putting anything in the little basket under or beside her seat. I don't know how many times we went home with 2 or 3 items from our grocery list for free.
If you feel really bad about it, you can return the diapers to the store and tell them the truth: You forgot them under the cart and didn't pay for them. Technically the cashier is supposed to look under the cart for large items, so I doubt they would be too upset with you for being honest.

Well, morally, you should have gone back to pay for them...and fankly, as a retail manager for many years i would have told you that i wasn't going to charge you for them b/c it was my cashier's responsibility to check the bottom of your cart.
things like that happen all the time and even though you feel a little guilty, it's mainly the store's responsibility to ensure you purchase everything in your cart.
however, "shrink" like that causes prices to increase...FYI to anyone who really steals from stores. the more that's stolen the more the store needs to get back and therefore raise the prices.
so...time for my story!
yesterday my husband and i were at a convenience store and his total purchase was about 3 dollars. he handed the cashier a $5 bill and she input the amount wrong. she put $50 in the register instead of $5. well, she proceeded to hand him 40+ dollars in change and he stopped her. she said "but the register says you get $47..." he said, "no, you entered the wrong amount in..."
she still didn't understand.
he got the right change but when he came out to the car and told me the story i told him that the store shouldn't employ morons and he should have taken the money!!!!
we had car trouble later on and we may need a new transmission....that's when my husband agreed....he should have taken the money. transmissions are expensive and $47 could help...a little!

The same thing happened to me. I was at my car when I noticed I had not paid for something. What do you do? The store was so crowded, I had waited in line forever. Then the thoughts of all the times I was overcharged for something went running through my head. Maybe this one time made up for all those times I got cheated!!! I think if it happens once then just forget about it. Don't let the thrill of getting away with it make you want to try it again. You just may end up in jail???

No matter how you look at it, stealing is stealing, no doubt about it and it isn't a laughing matter.
For everything someone steals or forgets to pay for or whatever you want to call it, someone else has to pay for sooner or later. You all complain about high prices, one reason they are high is to offset theft losses.
In good conscience I could not walk out like that without going back to pay for the item, long line or not. Instead of going back through the register I would have gone to the courtesy desk and explained what happened, most have a register and they probably would have checked you out there.
The only thing you have shown me is how outstanding your character is. It really isn't one that I would be willing to share with the whole world like you have.
Such good things you will be teaching your child as he/she grows up.

Ahhh, quit giving this woman a hard time - it was an honest mistake. I did something similar when I was about 7 months pregnant with twins and literally didn't have the energy to go back in the store...I put the cost of the item plus my regular "gift" in the church's basket that Sunday.

You didn't mean to steal it, so I don't think that it's really stealing unless you intended to not pay for it. My advice: be normal and keep it. If it bothers your conscience (doubtfull) go back and pay for it. They'd be more than happy to take your money. Next time be a little more carefull or you may be explaining this to a security guard instead of us!!

the same thing happened to me and my dad when we buy sodas, beer, or dog food and forget to put in on the band. I think that this happen to everyone at least once. many people return the stolen goods but many people (me included) just act like nothing happened, I'm sure the store steals from us when we are not looking.

I am sure you and your cart are on the surveillance camera walking out of the store with the unpaid diapers.
