It depends on many things. Did you just want a membership to one particular location, or did you want the option to go to any Equinox? You can also get special deals for joining with your family or your company.
Often, gyms will offer special discounts, so keep your eyes out for specials. Plus, many of them will throw in free benefits for paying up front instead of monthly (I paid for my first year when I joined, and got a ton of free time on top of that).
I'd recommend giving them a call and asking about the basic plans and what the average costs are!

Maintenance Fee is just another word for the bank charging you a fee for holding your money for you until you need it. In years gone by, banks made money from interest on loans. They paid you to give them your money to loan out. Today most of banks income is from selling financial instruments back and forth and in investments. They no longer need your money to make money so they charge you to hold your money until you need it.
