you know the ones where they try to sell you something, you don't have to buy, and in return you get a free trip. Airfare, and hotel accomodations, you only pay a small deposit. Looking for people who have taken these trips and were the accomadations terrible, were there any "catches" to getting a free trip?

The hotels are fine.
The only catch is that you have to spend about 1/2 day listening to their sales pitch. If you have no intention of buying, just keep telling them that, listen to the pitch and leave. Enjoy the rest of the trip. I did that in Orlando and got free hotel and free tickets for 2 days to Universal Studios. It was great!
Just make sure you DON'T BUY ANYTHING.

Ugh...... No the hotels aren't bad. However..... They are not free at all. Read the fine print. Usual for time shares or vacation clubs. Keep in mind you can get there and stay cheaper than what they want to sell it for.
