Wow... I didn't know that about the church. Maybe your parents' congregation is screwed up... or maybe it really IS that way, redemption for a fee. That's just sad. I thought buying ones way into heaven had slipped into shaddow and memory like the Dark Ages. I guess not.
I am very much an ex-Catholic. I was raised Catholic same as you and could never make myself completely comfortable in the faith. The more I grew, the more I could think for myself, reason for myself, question for myself... and the more I drifted away from the church.
My family wanted me to go through confirmation knowing I had doubts. They wanted me to affirm my faith as a grown person, to profess voluntarily that I am making an informed, willfull decision to remain Catholic. I COULDN'T.
I'm an atheist now and am very happy with my decision. That's not to say that everyone who leaves the church ought to go down the same path as me. If you find another faith that resonates with you, go for it. If you become Buddhist, great! If you become Wiccan, groovy. Pagan? Super! Whatever you choose, make the decision for yourself and yourself only.
*Additional*
He's still giving them 10 grand a year? Ask him (politely, of course) why he's giving the CHURCH (no, not God, the CHURCH) all this money? He's excommuicated, right? Why continue to pay the CHURCH? It's not like he's paying God... would God want your father to pay him all that money? Does God really want 10 grand a year? Or would God prefer that your father spend it on deserving charities? Or on health insurance? Or on supporting his family?

HELLO!
I remember that my mother had to jump through hoops to get my brother's marriage annulled. He'd already been divorced, but she wanted to "clear his name." There was probably a fee involved, but I was pretty young so don't recall.
I don't understand why you have to put a notice in the paper if St. Jude answers your prayer - that one really stumps me.
I had some other big point, but I got called away to a meeting and now I've forgotten. If I remember, I'll pop back in.
Now I remember - one of my cousins married a divorced man. Her mother told everyone that they were not required to attend the wedding. I know she actually had good intentions there - didn't want anyone to go to hell on her daughter's account - but come on! How sick is that?
Ok, one more thing - in contrast to the other person, my mother wouldn't let me get confirmed because she knew I was a naughty girl. BUT I still had to take the entire year of CCD. I'm 40, and I'm still mad about that! lol

The Catholic Church is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world. That does not render every individual Catholic to be a bad person, but they should really open their eyes and see the showbusiness behind the Catholic Church.

Sorry, you are wrong. . .
The cost for a "Statement of Invalidity" is no where near $5,000 and even if it was, the Church only asks for what can be afforded.
On top of that, the Church doesn't excommunicate for getting a divorce and then getting married without the "annulment". Furthermore, the Church excommunicates not only those who abandon the true faith to embrace schism or heresy, but likewise the members of heretical and schismatic communities, not for getting re-married.
Please, spend some time to research a real issue before spreading lies.

I was a Catholic but am now a non-denominational Protestant. I truly believe I wasn't Born Again until I left Catholicism.
$5,000 seems a bit steep. Maybe he should have moved to Boston -- they're only charging $450. there: http://www.bu.edu/catholic/sacraments/annulment.htm
The USCCB says most charge between $200. and $1,000. http://www.usccb.org/laity/marriage/marriagefaqs.shtml
I guess it pays to shop around ...

I am disgusted with the Catholic Church, but it's not all about the money. Sometimes it's about the little boys too...

Certainly. I had 12 years of it. It preaches hatred of non-believers. I was brain washed from 5 years old. It is a form of child abuse. You never recover from it.
