My grandmother lost her husband 3 years ago. Since then she does not want to do anything or go anywhere or see anyone. She says she is sick with all of these symptoms but the doctors cannot find anything wrong beyond small things she takes meds for. I think she is deeply depressed and that her illnesses, while they feel real, are psychosomatic. She won't listen to anyone and worries about everything. Whenever we visit she is never glad to have company, she complains every day about everything, even small things, and things that make no sense. How can we help her if she doesn't want it? She's been on antidepressants, nothing works. What if someone just gives up? Anyone have these issues with elderly parents/grandparents?

She's still sharp, no Alzheimer's... and she has said she doesn't want a pet. My mom brings her little dog to visit though and Grandma does enjoy it.

I am 70 years old and have been married for 52 years , no one will ever know what your grandmother is going through, her heart is most likely broke and no one or any thing can put that back together, vist her and be kind to her she will not be with you long, as she has no reason to live now that her husband is gone.

It is quite common for the elderly to behave in this manner, when they have lost a spouse, or even a close friend. They tend to start thinking about their own mortality, and how much longer they have left. The only thing you can do is to keep going around, and act as cheerful as possible. She may come out of it or she may not.
I hope she does. Good luck & hang in there.

Nothing much you can do. Just continue to be there for her incase she needs you. By the way, has she been diagnosed with Alzheimers? Your family may want to have that checked out.

Please get a little doggie or kitty.

She will fall in love with one.

They are great therapy.

If she can't maintain one just visit her and bring little one in.

I guarantee she will open up!
