I'm going to be in Beijing for 8 days at the end of October. I'm trying to figure out how I should spend my time. I've never been to China (or the rest of Asia) before.

My girlfriend points out that I speak no Chinese of any sort, and all the guided tours and touristy spots seem "doable" in 4 days, including the Great Wall, so she thinks I'll get bored if I stay 8 days, and I should head to some other Asian city for part of my stay. I could do that, but my departing flight has to leave from Beijing, and I don't want to spend more than $400 leaving Beijing and coming back.

stay in the city for eight days. Beijing is a very beautiful city and so is the country. once you get there you would think eight days isn't enough to fully enjoy the city. be wise and.. moneywise!

How much of a hardcore tourist are you? How many things are you going to do in one day? Are you going to try to crash as many things as possible, or will you take time out for a leisurely coffee, finding a good dumpling place, or a fancy Beijing duck restaurant or what? There are plenty of things to see in Beijing but it's true that 8 days gives you some time to go somewhere else; you don't need to leave China. Just take a trip to one of the other cities, like Tianjin, which is close. Also there is more than one way to visit the Great Wall, and some of the sites are at least a day trip back and forth from Beijing. Beijing is a HUGE city. It takes a long time to get around in it. Visiting something like the Summer Palace, outside Bejing, can take a half day at least, or more, depending on how fast you are. Just have fun! (P.S. it's easy to spend less than 400$ on a side trip from Bejing within China).

Being may be the capital of China and also its political, financial, and national middle and you have the chance to see it today, look with hotelbye . Beijing is one of the very most visited cities in the world. Each year, countless readers arrived at Beijing to see the fantastic blend of previous and new. Beijing is just a city for many seasons. You can generally find something for you personally no matter what time you are in Beijing and whatsoever your pursuits are. It does take time to enjoy exactly what Beijing City has to offer but positively you cannot eliminate the opportunity to see Tiananmen Square. Situated in the heart of Beijing, Tiananmen Square is the site for substantial parades and rallies and the largest square of this type in the world.

Stay in Beijing, you will need them there are so many places to visit and tell your girlfriend that they have a large shopping district some malls are 5 stories high. There is a large style flea market on the other side of Tienanmen square next to large Tower, don't be afraid to haggle for best price.

Don't worry about language barrier, Many of the locals can speak English, they are learning because of the Olympics.

Make sure you use the restroom before you leave to a restaurant, most do not have public toilets. take plenty of napkins and T.P also carry lots of bottled water.

When taking a taxi make sure you ask them how far they can go, look for the ones that have a lot of travel stickers on them, the less they have the fewer places they are allowed to travel.

If you go to the Ming tomes take lots of money there is a mall/factory across from main gate you can get great deals on jade and other precious jewel that are government certified.

You can ask hotel staff if you have any questions.

You will get bord in 8 days. Take the night train to Xian and spend two nights there. You can see the terracotta soldiers and the Muslim part of town is interesting. It is worth just going for one night just to see the soldiers, nothing else like it in the world.

I did not speak any Chinese either, infact I was blonde, 21yrs old, American female on my own. Inside the Beijing train station there is a place just for foreigners to buy train tickets. You can do it for about 200 dollars, thats including your train ticket, food, site seeing and guest house. As for the night train book a bed in second class. You do not need to pay the extra for 1st class, its not worth it.

Pick a good guesthouse in Xian out. Have your hotel in Beijing call them and book a room for you (stay in a dorm if you don't mind it, then you will meet some people). Make sure that they arrainge for that hotel to pick you up at the Xian train station. The place that you stay at in Xian will most likely have tours there that will take you site seeing for a day, including the soldiers. The next day in Xian you could rent a bike and site see on your own. It is fun!

One more thing that I did in Beijing that was fun: renting a bike. I stayed really close to the forbidden city, so I rented a bike and rode along the canals to the summer palace. The bikes have locks so you can lock it up and walk around there. That took up an entire day for me. It was nice because I met so many Chinese along the way.

It will be worth your time and money to go and buy a lonely planet book on China. You could get two seperate books, I beleive they have one on Xian and Beijing or just a China one. But they will have good advice in it and also how to do all of it very cheap

I am so jealous of you! Have fun and be careful. If you have more questions feel free to email me.

i visited beijing with my parents when i was a kid and i remember spending something like half a month there and i actually don't think it was boring at all. it's really facinating there. and really if you are not into all those historic stuff and such... yeah, likely you'll be bored.

but there's so much to see there, the great wall-it's a full day thing cuz of travel time. and the the forbidden city. we spent 3 days there just visiting every single bit of it and i really enjoyed it.
of course i'm not saying you have to spend 3days in the palace. then there's still the museum, Summer palace, Temple of Heaven, the Ming tombs and the city itself... i'm thinking you might not have enough time!!
