I think those are your own words. I call them "lost, needy, addicted, hypocritical, undereducated, blind, deceived . . . "

People are fearful of the truth. Many religious people--of all religions--are gullible and believe in something because they solely want to, or are afraid not to. Some follow teachings that have been altered by mankind, and still refer to it as being "the Word of God." That seems like a great blasphemy to me.

Some people are stupid and gullible. Religious people must kind of act like them.

for the same reason that non-religious people are often accused of being stupid and gullible

It depends on what you mean by religious people. I am a spiritual person, i.e. believe in heaven, God, Jesus, angels etc... and occasionally I believe in people too. Does that make me stupid and gullible? Maybe, but I like to think that not all faith is ill-founded and that God watches out for His creations because He loves us.

Because there's a stereotype, largely inflated by some of the more shrill televangelists and certain political candidates, that all Christians are corn-fed, undereducated idiots who seemingly never made it past the eighth grade. Which is a really nice image for the thousands of us who pursued post-graduate education, speak articulately, are interested in science, history and the arts, and who have put a great deal of thought into what we believe and why.

I have never accused religious people of being stupid or gullible.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion.
Do you dislike other people's opinion if it does not agree with yours? If you do then you are stupid, if not then you are okay with me.

Easy targets. They put their whole world into a book. So, its easy for other people to say they are stupid and gullible for believing in a book.

Hey it is you again. I am still smarter than you although I am a Christian. Some of the most prominent figures in world history have been religious: Gandhi, Einstein, most American presidents, Constantine, The Pope, Billy Graham, Joan of Arc, etc. Average the number of books and literary works and raw influence that they have affected upon the world and compare it to your life and the life of your fellow liberal atheists.

Many non-belivers like to compare religion to fairy tales, such as the tooth fairy (a little overused, i know, but bear with the analogy). To us, it seems like another fairy tale, and some would wonder why one would believe a book that was written (by man) over 2000 years ago. But, believe what you want. I'm not trying to convert.

I find the same thing applies to non-religious people, and especially those who take their High School/College teachers at their word is truth, and everything in their textbooks are truth, but don't have the degrees or insight to go and question everything they've learned.
