I've had this problem since I was a little kid. It prevents me from playing football i.e. soccer and is really frustrating. I've had surgery twice, but the sides of my toenail keep digging into the skin. What is the best way of treating an ingrown toenail?

This sounds crazy but it works. Do this before you go to sleep at night. Peel a potato, cut off a chunk big enough to fit on the ingrown toenail, place it on the ingrown toenail, tie a string on it, not tight just enough to keep it on, put a sock on it. When you wake up the potato will be black and the skin on your toe will all be shrivled up with the ingrown toenail exposed, you will be able to pick it right out. This really works, you need to try it.

Believe it or not when I was younger I had minor surgery for my ingrown toenail 3 times! "Not fun" After they remove the Nail the doctor always said that there was a chance the nail would not grow back, it always did, and eventually I was stuck with the same problem. Until....

I finally went to a different doctor ready for him to tell me that I was going to need another surgery. He explained to me that what causes your toenail to curve downward into the skin is the thickness of the center part of your nail. He said to take a nail file and file down the center of your toenail until it is not so thick. Eventually the nail will not dig down into your skin. I did it and it worked! I haven't had a problem since.

At the time that I did this the nail was already embedded into my toe. After filing the nail really well the nail eventually came out. So if you are at this stage first try filing it and if it does not get better within 2 weeks you will probably have to get it out via surgery.

Keep them filed and cut short. Be meticulous about it.

The tendency of toenails to CURL (which is what causes this problem) is GENETIC and there's no treatment for it.

I know it sounds gross, but I yank my ingrown toenails out myself.
