i'm a bartender, and most people tip me $1 per drink. i'm a easygoing, nice girl and have alot of regulars who seem to really like me alot.

sometimes people don't tip at all...i'm wondering if they are just too drunk to remember to or maybe i'm not doing my job right somehow.

its frustrating, since i make all my money off tips. out of curiousity, what do you guys tip your bartender? and if you don't tip, what are your reasons?

thanks :)

If someone is drinking a lot they may not have a lot of money left for tipping. I don't really patronize bars and so I don't have a lot to do with buying drinks or tipping a bartender. But I think it is supposed to be common practice to tip a percentage of the drink. Good luck on getting people to pay for their tips.

I know a lot of rude non-tippers. If the bar is big enough to hop bartenders or they are not staying they don't tip to save money for more drinks.

I don't agree with this, it is just their explanation to me. If they are staying in the same bar by the same bartender they will remember their manners and tip well so they do not get ignored by the bartender for their next drink request.

I usually tip $2 or more a drink depending on the service I get. If the service is bad you might get my $.50 change or a $1 - but it has to be really bad. I live in a big city and you would not believe the level of rude some bartenders operate on. I worked in the service industry for 9 years so I know how getting a bad tip feels. I also know what level of service I can expect even if it is busy.

I used to be a server, so I always tip at least 25%. If I'm at a night club where drinks are pricey, I might only leave $1. But at a restaurant, I always tip good. I even tip on takeout, which I know a lot of people don't do, but lots of times it's the bartender that puts that order together. People are never going to understand what it's like living off of tips until they actually do just that.

I think it is rude not to tip. Personally, I tip at least 20-25% and I am usually the one who buys the first, second, and last rounds of drinks, so the bartenders always remember me and even gives us the last round of drinks on the house every now and then. And I never forget to tip, exept once where the bar was emptied because of a fire alarm, then I went back the following day to make sure they received a tip.

If the service was bad, maybe I'll tip 10%.

i do not drink very often, but when i do i tip. when i drink, i tell the bartender my name( sky and OJ) and tip( to insure promptness) him/her 10 bucks right out of the gate. My drinks are 4.50 each and I usually will have 4 or 5 before I leave. I drop all change in the jar( i sit at the bar) and tip again when getting my glass of water before I leave. But I do this cause I want to drink, and have a drink ready when the ice cubes have sucked up all the sky and OJ from my glass. Post a sign that says " tipping is optional, just like good service" and see if you get better responses. just give them what they pay for, good attentive service if extra and everyone knows that.

well..i usually don't tip if the bartender is stingy with the amount of alcohol he/she gives me or makes it wrong, or takes forever to serve me (when he/she is not even busy) i ordered an apple martini on the rocks at the club once..and the lady only filled the rocks glass less than half way (filled with ice) and charged me $11 for it! then she tried to argue with me. so screw her. but if the bartender hooks me up..then she will get a fatter tip!
depending on where i go:
@ a club-$1-2 tip per drink
@ a rest-$2-3 tip per drink (if the bartender is sweet)

on a side note~i'm trying to be a bartender myself! i think communicating with customers will make them feel they should tip u fatter.

In Japan, it is considered rude to tip the bartender or wait person. In some countries, it is this way. But in the EU, US, Canada and a lot of other places, it is common to tip your wait person. I usually leave 20% of my bar tab, the same amount if it's drinks and dinner.

in EU, tipping is not usual. In the US, I tip in the 15 % of the charge per drink - 1$ for a beer, but if I order a 12 $ glass of champagne, I'll tip 2$ or 3$. If ordering several drinks, of course, it gets multiplied...

;) I know tipping ensure faster service next time, so now I also tip in Europe similarly... you would not imagine how much it helps to make service friendlier and faster...

Well, tipping the bartender really good goes along with how the bartender treats them. Do you make a little convo with your customers? Sometimes I know I get too drunk and overtip but that's just me.

Tipping is not mandatory but should be seen as a bonus. It implies good service. I've made it a point in my life to tip if I get good service or see someone that is really putting in the effort. Tipping a bartender might be a good way to get better service after.
