I hope you have been saving your frequent flier miles. If you couple those with travelling from October to before Christmas in December, you can get from pretty amazing deals.
I don't live in the UK, but I went from Washington, DC to Australia and back for $95, which included airport tax.
Don't buy anything with cash...use your credit card and save those points.
Good luck!

I don't know that there are off season times for better tickets but I have had a lot of luck going through southwest.com for my tickets and as long as you travel during the week at off times you can get a really good deal. My husband and I both just traveled to Houston then to Philly and back to Chicago for a total of $560.

Best idea is to get a flight up to Canada - they have cheaper UK flights - try flyZoom.ca and CanadianAffair.ca
