This mostly depends on your own input and your influence. I love both my daughters more than life itself. Both, 13 and 3, are extremely loving, very sensitive to others, creative, talented, funny, and love God. Each has a unique God-ordination for her life, and was given life with intention and with purpose.

Speaking of 13-year-olds:
My 13-year-old is discovering her own niches and personal interests, but is rarely rude. She is mature enough to apologize after saying something she ought not to, but that does not happen too often. She is a happy, eager student, and a good friend to everyone. I have actually begun to enjoy a wonderful phase with her as a friend, confidante in girl-talk, shopping partner, prayer partner, co-teacher (for Sunday school), etc. now that she is a young lady. Strangers all think we are sisters lately (what a compliment to me!). My husband and I both emigrated from overseas (I was brought with my family) 31 years ago. We had rather more conservative values that those that we observed in this country, and decided we needed a bit of a plan going into parenting (I know, though, that to some degree each child is an individual, and you have to play it by ear with each, learning as you go!). One detail that my husband and I decided to do for each of our children upon their reaching 13th year was to honor their heritage and callings in a special bar mitzvah ceremony tailored just for her. She recognizes the respect and accountability that we attribute to her now that she is entering the age at which she hears from God and serves Him as her own God, and not just the God of her parents. She is now earning and achieving greater responsibilities to her God, to her family, and to her community.

If you are not secure with being the most supportive parent that you can be to *any* child with which you are blessed, please wait on procreation.

Isn't it rather archaic and unfair to brand or decide on the worth of any girl-- why did you not ask that question about boys? -- especially before knowing who she is? Girls are created in God's image like everyone else, are *definitely* as intelligent as males when given all the same opportunities, have unique and extraordinary gifts and qualities, and have equal value.

By the way, we have a son as well, and he is truly wonderful, but not just because he is a boy! Boys, particularly headstrong, challenge-everything firstborns (I should know!), come with their own set of challenges. If you are a wise and loving parent who actually spends TIME with your child, however, even the 'challenging' aspects of each child's personality can be channeled into positive character traits. I have read a great many books on parenting (and mostly go on common sense, experience, and the Bible, proven to be infallible), but have particular respect for anything written by Gary Ezzo, William Sears, and James Dobson.

I don't know what geography has to do with it, but girls go from being a joy to a incomprehensible nightmare at about 13.
