Well, come on. It's a tricky one to get right. To the other respondent, no - it isn't symmetrical. There is a subtle difference in the placement of the diagonal red stripes - in the top corner of the flag nearest the pole, it ought to be "broad side up" (the thick white stripe at the top). I agree, the Eden Plaza really should know what they're doing. Then again, maybe they've all been taken hostage and were trying to let us know...

Speaking of getting it right:

Flags are NOT flown at half mast. They are flown at half staff.

The tradition of flying a flag that way was meant to honor military dead, not civilians. Civilians "stole" the tradition from the world's militaries.

I'm not knocking the civilian use of the tradition, but since it already is a misuse, how can anyone claim the "right" way of doing it?

Finally, a flag, flown upside down is a sign of distress. Perhaps the hotel felt that it's nation was in a time of national distress and did not fear to show it.

If one is to be picky, one may as well get it correct on all counts. The only part this questioner got right was the name of the British flag. Three to one, against.

The flag of the Union is not symmetrical. Flying it upside down is a signal for distress. Maybe the hotel got it right!

Most American flags were flown at half staff - half mast applies only to national flags flown at sea.

Its terrible that so many people think that the union flag is symetrical ( and called jack ). So many uneducated idiots out there. READ A BOOK OR SOMETHING!

I would think it would be because the attack was on the United States and in the United States, and this particular thing wasn't a British thing (although, of course, they may have sympathized).

(Or is this a trick question because of the design on the flag....)

How can you fly a symmetrical flag upside down? That is silly and impossible.
