First, please realize you are taking on a lifestyle, not just a nostalgic old car. If so, happy camping!
I bought my "hippie"van (1970 Westfalia pop top camper -- I love it!!) from www.thesamba.com
It's a great website- search the classifieds -- you can narrow it down by type of vehicle or state, or both.
Also, try craigslist, but be willing to look in many different areas. There are several great places back east to find good buses.
Another great place to look is on ebay. Just ask a lot of questions.
If you're up for a road trip, go to Arkansas. They have one of the largest VW salvage yards there you'll ever see. But they also do project and restoration to get up and sold. You can check out their website at wayoutsalvage.com
Once you get your bus, try Go Westy for parts and what not to keep the camper parts of your new house on wheels functioning well.

They are here in California. I drive by one that is for sale every day. VW, Vintage 68-70 with pop-top. I see others driving around. Maybe the weather and road conditions on the East Coast make that a bad place to look for a 40 year old car. Try E-bay or if you are into a trip, come out here and do some browsing.

Living on the east coast will make it harder(not impossible) to find a bus that's not full of rust. So, if your in a hurry for a bus then you may want to look at getting one from out west and just paying to have it shipped to you. When it comes to buying vw the best advice I know is take your time and wait for the right car to come along and don't jump on the first thing you see. Got my last two vw for great prices stick with just taking my time. Anyways here are some places to look:
thesamba.com
ebay.com (check it out before you bid)
shoptalkforums.com
Local clubs, most have a website and cars for sale on them:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/clubs/
As well all the misc car sites in example:
www.collectorcartraderonline.com
cars.com
www.craigslist.org/about/cities.html
there's tons more out there just have to search
Good Luck and stay away from the ones the hippies owned, don't want to trust old repairs to someone that actually was smoking something.

Where can you find an old hippie? Go on line Volks Folks and other club web sites buy already restored so the previous owner has spent the time and will never get out of it what he has put into it.
