What a loaded question! How do you know it is infection? not all mouth pain means Root Canal! Hopefully you have been visiting your Dentist every 6 months, or at least once a year, if not you might indeed just have a gum infection from not getting your teeth cleaned routinely, or yes, it might be a cracked tooth, abcessed tooth, deep decay, etc.. get my point? call your Dentist! :)

The best infection killer is amoxicillin. But you have to have a prescription. If you need a pain killer most dentists just prescribe Tylenol 3 which is also a prescription but you can just buy extra strength tylenol and it will work about the same. Also try a warm tea bag on the area to draw out infection.

Dentist can give you antibiotics that will get rid of the infection. If the pain is intolerable, they can give you something like Tylenol 3 with codeine which will help a little bit. More important to get rid of the infection though.

Some form of anti-biotic to clear up the infection. Your dentist will prescribe it for you. Then root canal work if it's bad. Expensive. Hope you have a good health care insurer.
