I was told by the rescue that I got him from that he is part Chow Chow (which is evident by his coloring and the black spots on his tongue) and part Terrier, but we don't think he is part Terrier. (Since they also told us he would be 25lbs and is now 35, and soon going to be 40.)

What do you think?

Honestly, I am just curious of breed, because of just that, curiosity. I think that most of the time mutts make better pets. They socialize better.

There is one more reason. Riley has a (few) heatlh problem(s), (but the worst being) he has a terrible twitch (which has gotten better since I have had him), and I thought maybe if I could identify breed that might help narrow down why he does why he does this.

My guess would be Chow Chow & Australian Cattle Dog. You obviously know what a Chow looks like, here is the Cattle Dog: http://www.akc.org/breeds/australian_cattle_dog/index.cfm - when you go to see 'photos' (in the sidebar) the 5th picture is a red speckle one - see the resemblance?
He is a very handsome dog, by the way. Be sure to take him to places (like local parks) and let him interact with other dogs & people to get him all the socialization he needs, too - this will help ensure a healthy personality.

Chows are not the only dogs with black spots on their tongues. Labs have them, too. So he could be part Lab. Also, his face doesn't look wide enough to be a chow. Not only chows are that color, either. Try looking up dog breeds in ask.co. Then type in dog breeds or pictures. He is a very pretty dog, by the way. I hope this helps.

It's really hard to tell by pics. Not knowing how tall he is or anything like that..I'd have to refur you to the AKC website. You can look up both breeds that you were told and compare them both to Riley. You can also look up any other breeds that you might think he is instead. They have great pics and info about the different breeds. You may also be able to ask a professional their opinion on this cute little guy!Hope this helps and Good luck. He looks adorable!!

I think Chow/German Shepherd. His ears are close to a shepherds or corgis and his legs are looking too leggy for a chow...not seeing terrier-for one he doesn't have wiry hair...he has a mix of chow and shepherd hair..corgi is a possibility because of the shape of the head and ears, but those legs are not corgi..that's my best guess..He is cutie!

The head and ears indicate a welsh corgi.

But, what difference does it make? I mean, does it really matter? Your dog looks very content, happy to be where he is and it's obvious you consider him to be family. You rescued him "as is" rather than support a puppy-mill operation that supplies pet shops. That's quite admirable. He is sporting his rabies and ID tags which further shows you are a responsible dog owner. So who cares what breed, if any, you can attach to him?

I have a puppy that is, well, from a nice neighborhood. I tell people she's an "Amercian Short Hair (ASH)." If all short haired cats can be referred to as a Domestic Short Hair (DSH), why not call a short haired dog the American Short Hair?

Maybe we can start a trend.

I ACTUALLY THINK THE CLOSES MATCH FOR THIS DOG A MIX OF A FOX TERRIER WITH SOME CHOW CHOW, DEPENDING ON THE HEIGHT AND WEIGHT OF THE DOG IT MAY BE MIXED WITH SHEPPARD AS WELL.

what a beautiful doggy! thanks for rescuing him. i'm no expert but those big ears are kind of like a german shephards, so he might be mixed with this. There might be a little golden retriever maybe? he has that friendly kind of face. I rescued a pit mix at around 3 months old, and its been lovely seeing her growing up and wondering what she will look like. at one year old now she definately has a lot of bulldog in her - the undershot jaw and the slender body/colouring. Maybe you will just have to wait and see your doggy develop!
