These are some of my favorites- I grew up with an avocado tree right in my yard in South Florida. Avocados are best stored at room temerature. If you have an unripe, hard avocado you would like to ripen faster, put it in a plain brown paper bag, and it will ripen in a day or two. Seriously! Also, in items prepared with avocado, like guacamole, refrigeration will sometimes turn the concoction brown, but if you store it with the pit in it it won't. Odd, right?

Avocado Storage: Do not store unripened fruit in the refrigerator. Ripe fruit may be stored in the vegetable drawer in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. To freeze avocado, puree flesh with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice per 2 avocados, and place in a tightly-closed container with the air removed. Frozen avocado can be kept three to six months at 0 degrees F.
Miscellaneous Avocado Information: Avocados can weigh from 1 ounce to up to 4 pounds each. To ripen, place the avocado(s) in a brown paper bag and store at room temperature for 2 to 5 days, away from direct sunlight. Adding an apple or banana to the bag will hasten the ripening process. The flesh of the avocado quickly begins to darken when exposed to the air. The addition of an acid, usually lemon, retards the darkening process.

I keep mine in the fridge until I want them to ripen. You can leave them out on the counter for a couple of days or you can put them in a brown paper bag with a ripened banana for a faster result. A chemical that the banana gives off makes fruit ripen faster and the brown paper bag keeps enough of it inside without making everything go bad like a plastic bag would.

It depends on the avocado consistency.
If you wanna try something interesting wrap green avocados in newspaper, it sorts of creat a warm coat around them and it accelerates the ripening process.
But if your avocados are already ripe I'd recommend you leave them in the fridge but not for too long as other fruit and vegetables it may go rotten in a week or two.
