Rory, my beloved Great Dane has been eating chunks out of the ltterbox, but the odd thing is...only out of Rory (the cat's box)...I saw the big mutt chewing and crunching, but couldn't figure out from where....So..I watched him closely. He sneaks over covertly, and grabs big pieces of hardened poop and eats them. It is so gross! How do I stop this annoying and troubling behavior? I think he is jealous of Rory, the cat.

Of course Rory is Jealous! Take the pic of Bea Arthur down from above the litterbox! Rory thinks it is a shrine and the cat is paying homage and leaving gifts for Bea so Rory is eating them to make the cat look bad by looking like she left NOTHING in tribute. It's a simple case of dog/cat pawlitics..

I would put the litter box in an area that Rory (the dog) does not have access to.

We put our cat litter box in the basement. We also put a kitty door in the door to the basement so that the cat can come and go to the basement whenever he wishes, but the dogs (we have 3) cannot access the basement or the litter box.

As for the jealousy issue, it might have been a good idea NOT to give the same name to both your pets. How would you like it if you had a brother or sister with the same name as you?

Get a shock collar for the dog and place the transmittor beside the litter box with a setting of 3-6 feet. That will fix the problem in no time at all.

He's not jealous. Cat food has more meat content than dog food. He probably likes the taste, and he may be having a nutrient deficiency. Dog will often eat other dogs' poop, too. Try changing his diet. The above suggestions about a separate room with cat door are very good, too. Still, address the diet issue first. Might make the difference.

Ahhh... nuttin like a Zagnut bar, lol! My Danes have never done that but ya might wanna try a little discipline! Sneak up behind him when he even approaches the litterbox and smack him on the butt with a rolled newspaper. Do it everytime you can catch him.... and clean the zagnut bars out of the litter box!

I think your dog is helping the planet & your cat by recycling! If cows would eat their own stuff & not produce methane, the world would be a better place. Btw, In Japan there have been expiriments on extracting the unused protines in human fecees & making an eatable 'meat' from it. I'm sure thats more than you wanted to know, so I'll stop now...

move the litter box someplace the cat can get to and not the dog. You might want to talk to your vet about that, I had a rabbit who did that and it died! We were cat sitting for someone and I dumped some of the litter outside, we went in the yard one day and found the rabbit had passed on while we were out at school. Darn that rabbit for eating everything it could chew.

You need to get a covered litter box and put it up where the dog can't get it. good luck with that because great danes are tall. another idea, my cousin'd dogs do this, too. they put the litter box in closed room and put in a small kitty door. only the cat has access to the box.

Use a covered litter box that has a small entrance. Or you can put the litter box somewhere that your doggy can't get to. All dogs do this so do not be worried, it is a normal behavior.
