how much depends on breed, their age, health and level of activity. Dogs don"t require proteins as such; they need the amino acids that make up the proteins. They make some non-essential amino acids within their bodies, but dogs must get the rest from animal or plant products that contain protein. These will ensure that your dog's cell-building, blood-clotting,infection-fighting and myriad other bodily processes are functioning properly. Working dogs- those that herd live stock or haul sleds-need more high quality, animal-derived protein than sedentary dogs. When properly balanced with other nutrients, fats are essential to your dog's good nutrition and health as well as being an important source of energy. Feeding the proper amount of a complete and balanced dog food should ensure that they get the right amount of fats, but beware too many calorie-packed treats and snacks.Make sure they have plenty of fresh water as well. Read the bag it should give measurements for how much to feed. You can also ask you vet. They usually have lots of pamphlets on the right diet for your dog. good luck

25/15 is a good ratio for most dogs.

But you also have to think about where the protein is coming from, not all protein is equal. Does it come from meat/bone meal? Chicken? Does the food have cheap fillers like corn or several different types of rice?

There are some good (and some not so good) online articles about nutrition. Read some and then go to the feed store and study labels.

Many of the Saint breeders recommend that you do not use a food with that much protein or fat for a Saint puppy. They also recommend adult food from nearly the beginning. (Has to do with growth issues and not wanting them to grow too quickly). The loose stool and diarrhea may be from a change in food, water, or nerves. We use Eagle Pack Holistic Duck and Oatmeal for our Saints and have been very happy, but it is not a cheap food. However, the better the quality of food, the less you have to feed and there is also less clean-up in the back yard.
