Demon possession was the common thought. I wouldn't rule that out today, however. Not that all symptoms of schizophrenia are related strictly to demon possession. I just think that it is foolish for the Psychiatric industry to completely rule out the spirit world as a culprit to many of societies ills.
The Bible says in Ephesians 6:12 "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
I have read in your previous questions that you have struggled with drug use. I will say that Scripture also tells us that when we do this, we open ourselves up to demonic harassment's, if not possession even. This is why many people, for many years, some still to this day, refer to Alcohol (A drug) as "Spirits".
I don't want to freak you out and make you think that you are demon possessed, but you did ask a question that deserves a Biblical answer.
I will say further that clearly God is doing a work in your life and clearly God is on your side and the Bible also says in Romans 8:31 "If God is for us, who can be against us?" Though it is wise to know the enemie's tactics, don't worry so much about the enemy and what he might do to you.
Instead, think on your Father in Heaven, who loves you more than your earthly mind could ever comprehend. And Read Ephesians Chapter 6. God tells us there how to put on the FULL ARMOR OF GOD that the enemy would not be able to cause us to stumble and fall. Do take the time to read that. It will be a huge blessing to you. Read some commentary on it as well that you might fully glean what the Lord would have you understand.
God bless you greatly in your search and may you continue to run the race without wavering.
I dare say that your questions have been a blessing to me as well as they have served to remind me of all that God has brought me through. God is using you, even now, to share His great love with others.

A common recognition of grestest scholars in their contemporary society is that of a mad person. So no body should have been listening to their explaination of madness when they are giving one.

They used to blame demon possession. Now they blame chemical imbalance, tramatic experiences, or brain damage.
