He or she will grow out of the chewing stage after they are over a year old. I have a 6 year old female Golden Retriever and she chewed everything the first year. We bought rawhide chewies, toys, you name it. It's just something they have to grow out of.
But that been said, they are great dogs. Very family oriented. My dog wants to be with me all the time. Walking, car rides or just puttering around the yard. Very good dogs. And you've just got to love that face. "S" Have fun with your new friend.

You do realize that you own a 'Retriever' dont you. They retrieve..aka...put and hold things in their mouth. You are going to have to redirect him to things that he is allowed to have....most retrievers like things that are softer vs. harder. Get him some chew toys and I would probably get him a canvas 'bumper'...you can get all of this at a pet supply shop. Other than that, if you havent already, put him in a reward based training course. Most of the retrievers get very discouraged and dont do as well with harsher methods. When you are not home to work with him, he should be crated to keep him from ingesting anything harmful and/or from eating your house. Dont forget to give him something to do while he is in there..such as a Kong, sterilized bone, or a beef rib, ect. Just make sure he is not left unattended with rawhide. When in doubt read the warning label on the back.

First off, he is a dog, and a puppy at that, so it's just his nature to put things in his mouth.
And taste may not stop him at all. I have seen dogs eat other animals' poop, and I know that can't taste good.
Your best bet is to get everything you can out of his reach.
When he does put something in his mouth (that you don't want him to) you can teach him a command that will tell him to drop it. Everytime he does this take a spray bottle and spray him with water and say "Drop It", and tell him "Good Boy" when he does, and give him a treat even.
After a while he will learn "Drop It" on his own, and you won't need to coat things in tobassco.

Ha! You are kidding, right? The name "retriever" in the breed is a clue - never! He is obsessing a bit more now, as he is a pup & they like to put things in their mouth, no matter WHAT breed, but retrievers are genetically engineered to put things in their mouths. When I worked for vets, many people would walk in with their Golden beside them holding it's leash in it's mouth. This is very common. The best thing to do for now is always keep an 'approved item' (i.e.rawhide bone, squeak toy) within close range, & when he takes something not approved, say "NO!" firmly, remove the bad & give the good one - then praise, parise, praise! He will get the point soon. These are smart dogs & probably one of the most motivated breeds to please it's owners. Good luck!

Te he. Poor thing I know the feeling, but he will grow out of it. You can make this go faster by making designated chew areas. Only let him chew in certain places like his crate and outside. Anytime you seem him chewing in any place that is not designated, tell him no and take it away. This worked for my golden mix within a week. Good Luck.

Never! Retrievers and Labs were bred to bring their master home things in its mouth! They chew everything they can and eat whatever is available! Get him lots and lots of toys! Keep everything closed up and out of reach from your dog. Especially any medicines in the house and toxic chemicals!
They are just like two year old kids!
Take Care

well he is probably teething right now, which will last a few months, and it will get a bit better, but i am sorry to report i think he may continue to chew, i have heard that retrievers chew a lot, but with much enforcement, you may be able to train him... Make sure he has lots of chewable toys, and keep on him about which ones are for him to chew and which items belong to you and are not for chewing.
Best of luck

He is a puppy and puppies will chew just about anything. He will out grow that.
If you know or know of some one who does know someone who has retrievers then ask them if their grown dog is still chewing everything in site like he did when he was a puppy.

Should really do more research before getting a pet.
Its real bad now due to teething. It will subside he eventually won't destroy things. I have one that just carries things around. If you give him a biscuit he will just carry it around a while toss it in the air and make sure everyone else already ate their so he can eat his in front of them. Then he goes back and finds a toy to carry. He's three.

He won't. He's a dog. My dogs constantly pick something up that interests them.
For indoor things, what you can try is Alum powder, it should be in the baking section in the grocery store. It makes food taste bad. Or maybe try a citrus spray.
As for outside, whenever you see him pick something up that he shouldn't, say no in a firm voice and redirect his attention elsewhere.
