The baptists I've talked to are less than excited about a prison ministry to show Christ's love to prisoners. Is there some kind doctrine thing going on here?

Based on the answers coming in I'd say its just the people I'm talking to and not representative of all baptists.

Well, my church does not have a prison ministry at this time. Not that we don't want to, but it is easier said then done. Our problem is getting it cleared and ok'd through the proper authorities. And we either are denied, or stuck in red tape.

We want this to happen. There are so many people who need to know about salvation or need to just get their heart right. God is not just for the prim and proper. If that was the case, I wouldn't stand a chance. And if you know of someone who feels the way you described, then they need to be reminded of Mary Magdeline or even the thief on the cross.

I don't know what doctrine they are using but it is not biblical.

They feel these prisoners do not deserve their attention. Also they are afraid of the prisoners.

My Mom, however, is Baptist and does go to the jail to give the female inmates necessities that they may be doing without, like shampoo, lotion, etc. She probably got interested in this when I was in jail. Made it real to her that prisoners are just people who have messed up at some point.

There are Catholic and Buddhist ministries in jails and they provide much comfort to the prisoners.

No, it's just that prison ministry is a challenge where they must constantly be on their knees and on their toes, and a lot of Baptists (and others) don't want to bother with it.
