That's a question only you can answer.

I personally prefer larger dogs because they tend to be less "yappy", but I've known some nice pomeranians.

I live with a Pom and I also deal with them daily at work (vet's office) so I have a few things I've noticed about the breed:

1. They're a Spitz-type dog, meaning they tend to revert to instinctual behavior and are notorious for being difficult to train. Their bladder control isn't absolutely perfect, like other small dogs, but if you can handle a Shih Tzu, then it shouldn't be a problem.

2. Yip, yip, yip. They like to yip. A lot. They yip when they're excited, angry, anxious, stressed, curious, scared, and hurt.

3. If not properly socialized, Poms tend to become aggressive. I would have it around other people and dogs on a daily basis. Sometimes even boarding it at the vet's office or a kennel for a couple of days can help with this.

If you take all these into consideration, then Poms are wonderful little dogs. Congrats on having a healthy happy pup already, and I wish you luck in your quest for another little pal.

poms are good. They can be a bit nippy if not socialized correctly, however that's true of most small dogs.
