I believe because, yes, the alternative is indeed much darker for me. I dare say that living my life as a Christian has been far greater than my life otherwise. I remember my life before Christ. I don't want to go there again.
If I were to die today and there is no God, I have lost nothing. But if the unbeliever dies today and there IS a God, they have lost everything.
I choose to believe because since I have believed, life has been so much better. Yes, I choose light over the darkness.

to be honest, no. If , as most atheists believe , we die and become nothing more than worm food, that to me is the "easy way out" nothing really dark or scary about that- I mean no more pain suffering, awareness, etc- just gone and nothing left to be worried or upset aobut being gone- so hey, this sounds like a good idea from the carnal point of view.
The fact is there is a higher authority that we will be accountable to- I know that I ma not perfect and I will have to answer for every idle word (and believe me- for me there is plenty!)
I cannot say that I know the details about what will happen after I die, sometimes knowing that I will be facing my maker is a scary thought to me, but most of the time I am comforted , knowing that I do have a merciful and loving Father who has made a way for me to have fellowship with Him and in Christ I have freedom and am cleansed from sin.
You can think or believe what oyu want about it but it does not make it any less true.
I, personally, think atheists choose to believe there is no God because it makes death less scary for them- it is a lot more comfortable and a lot easier to believe that we will have no authority to answer to- no one to be accountable to and no uncertain life to contend with after death on this earth.

That is the basic message you will find if you read this: www.godpart.com/premise it is the premise of a book about why people hold firm to beliefs that truly make no sense at all. I found it to be refreshing and it felt like the truth when i read it. I am not a scientist or doctor, so I have to take his word for the technical parts reguarding the inner workings of the brain chemistry and such. But check it out and see what you think of it.

I agree - many of the beleivers agree as a CYA option.....I hear so many make statements about how they would hate to be when when it comes time to die, because I have nothing to look forward to. This is proof that these people fear their own demise and that their religion provides a sense of relief from the scariness that is death.

Dear child, while it is true that faith in God does give us courage to face troubles, there is much more to it than that. We know that God loves us, and we want to share this love with the rest of the world...even though we are called all sorts of nasty names for this, we still follow the One Who loves us. Sure, we lose our patience at times, and get angry and frustrated, just like anyone else. Sure, we have our fakes and phonies, just like any other religion.
Remember that God told us in His Word that, in reality, there would not be very many disciples, but that the world would know them by their love.
God is very real, my friend...just as real as death...and He is only waiting for the last lost child to come stumbling home....
Could it be that He is waiting for YOU??

For me, who is a Christian with.... different views as others, Death is only dark when a person dies without knowing Christ. As for me, I don't care if I die today, tomorrow, or in 40 years. Because, if what I believe is true (and I know it is, cuz God has revealed himself to me on numerous occasions) I'm goin to heaven. So why fret over death? I'm goin to a better place.

Hell is not only dark but it is hot. Mark 9: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. God has made a way for all to go into God's heaven. The Lord Jesus Christ came to earth to die for our sin believe and trust in that and you will have salvation. Reject it and hell will be your home.

I believe because I feel the truth through the Holy Spirit. It makes sense to me.
How we face death is not a reason to believe, but a nice aspect of our faith. It is comforting, but I would not believe just for that.
Peace!

For the one who said, "death is just a change from one plane of existence to another. why should anyone fear death when such an adventure is possible?"
Ask what would happen if that plane lands you in a lake of fire.
