I think its a combination of factors - 1) Spelling isn't taught in English lessons like it used to be, children don't do regular spelling tests and are not taught things like i before e except after c.
2) texting - its a great invention, but teenagers use mobiles so much they start to use abbreviated language in essays and other work.
3) The worst spellers are the ones who skive in toilets and write messages on toilet doors!! So they are the ones who miss all their english lessons!
There is not the rote learning like there used to be.

i cant spell worth a crap. i also have ADHD. but i am great at math and all sciences. Einstine couldnt even tie his own shoes. it is not that we are incompatint. i mean i graduated when i was 14 from high school. some people are great at spelling but there social skill are lacking. My gramer and pubcuation suck as well. i wont use spell check so you can see what i mean. the funny part is that my mom is an english teacher. the spelling thing bothered her at first, them she talked to a shrink and she told her that the fact that i sucked at spelling had nuthing to do with how smat i am. infact i have had the pleasuer of takeing an intelagence test and no ware, in the whole testing prosses did they ask me how to spell a thing. they did ask me to try to rember, hat, boot, and table. then they asked if i could rember the words 3 days later. that was when i was 7 years old. i am now 28. i hope that helps.

English isn't terribly easy to spell to start with. The language doesn't follow its rules terribly well, and the phonetics can be pretty tough to work out.
That being said, I'm a terrible speller but fortunately I also know how (and have the self respect) to click a spell checker, so part of it is lack of caring.

The goal of good people is to form a union of peaceful understanding. Many people are not good. They divide and compare (racists, sexists, the religious, anti-homosexuals, etc.) in order to derive narrow-minded feelings of superiority. With such a global forum as Yahoo Answers, an infinite variety of humans are trying to communicate sincerely with each other. There is great wisdom is practicing how to understand others, no matter what the obstacle (language, education, grammar, spelling, emotion, etc.) There is only fear and hatred in nit-picking.

Omg, I love you. Thank you! Nothing irritates me more than when people A.) are too stupid to know how to spell or B.) don't care enough to spend 10 seconds looking over what they wrote. Sure, this is coming from someone who almost won two spelling bees, but still! It's not that hard!

Well, my excuse is that I had a hippy for an English teacher.
Hey man, he would say, Shakespeare couldn't spell his name consistently, so what does it matter if you can't spell Chrysanthemum?
My quasi-literacy was a source of great shame, but then someone invented spell checkers! Sorted!

The jury is still out on this one my dear.
It seems an equal split between total laziness and lack of any form of dignity versus the plain stupid.
I will get back once sentence has been pronounced!

Because English is one of the most difficult languages in the world.Anyway as long as people can make themselves understood what difference does it make? Spelling is like punctuation and both should be consigned to History
